Great Day!

Congratulations on taking the brave step to explore the job market and gain experience! Even though you're young and opportunities might seem limited, don't let that hold you back. Embrace this time to soak up everything school has to offer. The skills you gain in high school will benefit you forever, and you're only young once, so enjoy all the exciting things freshmen get to do.

To start, check the requirements for getting your working papers or card in your state, as rules vary on age and work hours. Doing a little research will help you understand your options.

For job opportunities, try calling local stores to see what age they hire. This can save you time and guide you on where to apply in person. Babysitting or dog walking are also great options—just talk to your neighbors and show them how responsible you are.

Consider volunteering at places like the library or a local hospital. It's a fantastic way to gain experience and they might think of you for future jobs.

Chase your dreams without fear—I’m cheering you on all the way!

Hi Xyza,

Thanks for sharing your question! To answer, I would consider my school schedule and the responsibilities your parents have for you at home. I say this because most part time jobs (i.e. retail, food service etc...) would almost always need you on the weekends (after 2 pm - closing); and if during the week (3 pm -closing). These are usually the on demand days and times most part time opportunities need employees.

If that schedule work out - consider getting a job close to home or along your parents job route just in case you need to factor in transportation. I would start looking at small local businesses first and apply to 3 a day using indeed.com as a place to see who is actually hiring.

Make sure these companies have an actual website and apply through the companies career website (to reduce getting phished or scammed!)

Some companies to try: goodwill, dollar tree, local small grocery stores, uniform stores, and (any credible company that is specifically looking for a cashier!)

As far as job history try to use any volunteer experience as your 'jobs'; also any clubs or extra curriculum that you can use as experience at school.

All in all, it's great to get your career started right now because these jobs build the foundation for your future! I wish you the best of luck!

Take care!

The most important factor to consider is their scheduling flexibility. Ensure they can accommodate your school timetable because school should always come first. Next, think about the location of the job in relation to your school and home. This will help you stick to a routine without worrying about long commutes.

For job history, aim for positions in retail or the food industry that require little to no experience. This will help you start building your resume. As you gain experience, you can explore more opportunities.

Good luck! You can do it!

Many people here have included great advice about balancing work with school, but another consideration that personally applied to me when I was your age is sports. If you participate in any sports, decide if you want work or sports to take priority (in addition to schoolwork of course which I would put at #1 priority). And if you feel your priorities getting out of alignment, make the shift and do what's best for you. If sports is part of your life, balancing that with work and school can be very difficult.

It's obviously important to be ambitious and have dreams, but when you are just starting out, it can also be tremendously useful just working any job you can get to start to familiarize yourself with the professional world. You don't need to work any job forever, but there are important lessons you can learn from any job. Don't be afraid to be open to learning even if you don't necessarily love what you are doing.

How exciting! It's awesome that you're thinking about getting a part-time job! Before you apply, make sure you can balance your schoolwork, activities, and job by setting hours that work for you. Check if you need a work permit since each state has different rules about how many hours you can work and what jobs you can do as a minor. Boost your resume by showing off your skills, volunteer work, and activities. Practice interview questions with family or friends to make it more fun and less stressful when you have a real interview. Most importantly, find a job you'll enjoy, whether it's making coffee, preparing food, or working in retail. There are lots of fun and rewarding part-time jobs out there. My daughter loved working at a clothing store where she made great friends and got a discount on clothes. Good luck with your job search!

Any job can provide life skills such as team building and social skills. Consider the time needed and schedule of the job with your school schedule. Retail jobs may give you experience with dealing with the public and help with getting over shyness and communication. Is this job something that I love, such as a referee in a sport. Maintaining a job in good standing will help with getting personal and work references for the next job. Sometimes these high school job become the only source you have to show your personal skills and reliability. Also, take any job you take seriously including that fast food job as you don't want to burn any bridges in life.

Starting a part-time job as a high school freshman is an exciting opportunity to gain experience, improve your time management, and earn some money. Before you dive in, it's helpful to think about a few important things. First, make sure you can balance your schoolwork and job (plan when you'll do homework and study). Next, figure out how you'll get to and from work. Finally, pick a job that matches your interests or future goals. By preparing in advance, you can make this journey both enjoyable and manageable.
