Julia’s Answer

Hi! I'm currently studying communications as well, and have discussed the prospects of becoming a reporter with my professors in upper level classes. One piece of advice I was given was to try and get as much exposure in a newsroom as possible. From what I have been told, they look for students and professionals who have honed their journalistic and creative skills.

My best piece of advice would be to leverage your network! Wherever you go to school, connect with alumni who currently work in broadcasting. Set yourself up to take on internships in a newsroom, even if they are not directly on-air experiences. All of these opportunities can catalyze your career in broadcasting. While it might not happen overnight, the more you put yourself out there, the faster your career could begin!

Julia recommends the following next steps:

Connect with alumni in the industry
Search for internships in a newsroom setting
