Hi Lia,

I am assuming you are going to attend the BSHP program at University of Minnesota -Rochester.

You are going to earn a bachelors degree (Bachelor of Science in Health Professions, BSHP). That's 4 years total which are basically split in 2 parts: the first 2 years are foundational courses and gen ed requirements. Those are the pre-requisites for the sonography program. The sonography program admits into junior year and teaches the upper level courses.

You can do the pre-requisites at Rochester or anywhere else. There are some advantages to doing all 4 years at the same school so you can use all the resources and find a community. But if you do the pre-requisites at a community college you can save some money since tuition will be less.

If you download the course planning chart, you'll find a spreadsheet with the courses that fulfill the requirements for lots of different colleges:

https://r.umn.edu/umr-admissions/undergraduate-admissions/bachelor-science-health-professions/prerequisite-coursework

Please als consult with the admissions office to make sure you make the correct choices.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!

Michelle’s Answer

lia, you enroll in U of M and take the prerequisites there at U of M. Once you've passed and completed the prerequisites, you enroll in the U of M's Sonography Program. The path will be uniform, all U of M Sonography students will have learned through the same prerequisites. You should not take the prerequisites at a different college or a community college. It will all be through U of M.

Hi Ila,

You can take your prerequisite courses at either the University of Minnesota or a community college. Community colleges often offer more affordable classes. Also, check if your high school and local community college offer dual enrollment. This allows you to take college classes while still in high school, saving money and giving you early exposure to college-level courses. Your high school counselor can help you find out if this option is available.

If you have questions about whether a class meets the prerequisite requirements, I recommend contacting the U of M Sonography program directly. They are likely eager to assist future students.

Good luck!
