What are some "Mickey Mouse degrees colleges give out?

I've heard of "Mickey Mouse" degrees (degrees that are useless and makes you realize that you spent 4 years of your life doing nothing) and want to learn more about them. Everybody knows that women's studies is pretty useless, but are there anymore "Mickey Mouse" degrees colleges give out? I seriously think that these degrees were created by colleges so they could earn more money.

Andrew’s Answer

The idea of "Mickey Mouse" degrees is inherently biased as a starting point. They presume that the only point of a University education is to get a degree that directly transitions you into the workforce. The point of higher education is just that: higher education. Is a degree in women's studies useless if you want to be an electrical engineer? Yes.. But if you want to work for a non-profit seeking to help young women excel in STEM then it would probably be a useful degree. Any degree can be useful depending on what your career and personal goals are.

Andrew recommends the following next steps:

Learn more about diverse education options in college. The only point of a degree is not getting a related job.

Hi Noelani,

Interesting question (I've never heard the term "Mickey Mouse" degrees before, learning moment for me). I would say that what is/isn't considered a Mickey Mouse degree really depends on the person and what they want to do. If you want to be an accountant, then choosing to study creative writing probably would not be a wise choice. Everybody has varied interests and to label one degree as a Mickey Mouse one fails to take into account the interests of other people. Are some degrees more employable than others, very much so; a person majoring in STEM is much more employable than someone who is majoring in the arts. This is not to say that a person shouldn't major in art or that it is impossible to find a job, just that it will likely be harder to be employed with an art degree compared to a degree in STEM.

Think about what your interests are and where you see yourself after graduation.

I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck.

Best,

Austin

Kista’s Answer

I wouldn't say degree's themselves are "mickey mouse" degree's. It is what one chooses to do prior to obtaining the degree. Figuring out what you want to do with the degree is important. Seek out internships,, a day in the life program. If the industry you want to go into does not have a internship program, ask anyway, maybe you will be the young person that makes them create one.
