Shay’s Answer
CareerVillage.org is a non-profit online platform that works by connecting students with volunteer professionals from various industries who can answer their questions about careers and education.
Students, typically ranging from ages 14 to 24, sign up for free accounts. They can ask any question about any career, from general inquiries about a field to specific questions about job applications, education pathways, or skills needed. CareerVillage uses a matching algorithm, enhanced by AI and machine learning, to connect student questions with relevant professionals.
Professionals sign up as volunteers and provide information about their background and career topics they are knowledgeable in.
When a question aligns with a professional's expertise, they are notified. Volunteer professionals answer the student questions, offering personalized insights, real-world wisdom, and practical guidance. Multiple professionals can answer the same question, providing diverse perspectives. All advice is reviewed by trained moderators for safety, quality, and appropriateness.
All questions and answers are made publicly available on the platform, creating a large, open-access reference source of career advice that other students can benefit from. This aims to be a "Wikipedia of career advice" – a universally trusted source of information.
CareerVillage collects and uses various types of data to operate its platform, enhance user experience, and achieve its mission. They have a privacy policy that outlines their data practices, and they also share insights on their data blog.
As far as data, this is what I could gather during a search:
Types of Data Collected:
Personal Information: This can include individual identifiers like name, username, birth date, gender, and contact information (mailing address, phone, email).
Educational Information: Details about educational background, school, degrees, graduation year, and academic qualifications.
Communications and Preferences: Any messages, opinions, in-app survey feedback, and user preferences.
Sensitive Personal Information (in some cases): This may include racial/ethnic origin, sexual orientation, transgender/nonbinary status, or citizenship/immigration status. This is collected or processed only when necessary for the services.
Device and Browser Information: IP addresses, geolocation, unique device identifiers, browser types, language, and cookie information.
Interaction Data: Referring/exit pages, platform type, clicks, time spent on pages, search criteria, email opens, and link clicks.
Information from Third Parties: They may receive additional personal information from third-party websites, social media platforms (like LinkedIn, Facebook, X), or publicly available sources.
How Data is Used:
Platform Functionality: To match students with professionals, facilitate communication, and enable core features like asking and answering questions.
Personalization: To tailor advice and resources to individual student needs and preferences, especially with the AI Coach feature.
Improving Services: Analyzing user activity and feedback to enhance the platform, identify trends, resolve bugs, and moderate content.
AI Model Training: While they state that no student data is used to train AI models for the Coach feature, they do use large datasets of resumes, cover letters, and applications to train their AI to offer general advice.
Analytics and Insights: To understand user demographics, engagement, and the impact of the platform. They share anonymized data for research and analysis purposes (e.g., through Kaggle datasets).
Communication: To send emails (immediate, daily, or weekly digests) related to questions, answers, and platform updates.
Security and Fraud Prevention: To protect user accounts and ensure the integrity of the platform.
Marketing and Outreach: To inform users about relevant opportunities and to promote the platform's mission.
Key Data Principles:
Privacy and Security: CareerVillage emphasizes its commitment to privacy and security, adhering to standards like SOC 2 and FERPA compliance for student data.
No Selling of Personal Data: They state that they do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data.
Transparency: They provide clear privacy policies and a data blog to share insights into how they use data to help young people.
In essence, CareerVillage.org serves as a vital bridge between students seeking career guidance and professionals willing to share their expertise, all powered by a system that intelligently connects the two and leverages data to improve its services and impact.

Jack, based on what I understand, the CareerVillage platform is basically a platform that professionals can share their experiences, ideas, answer questions, and/or provide advice to young people around the world. I believe that most come from low-income communities, but it is not limited to that as I have given advice, suggestions, and/or shared my experiences with people from all over the world. I also think it a great place to learn about a career or career path that a student may be interested in. I do hope that my answer helps you.

Hi Jack - great question and excellent advice from Ben and Shay! I want to add a couple of points:
- As Shay mentioned, you can search existing questions and answers, meaning you can often get instant advice. You could also using Q&As to refine your questions.
- There are other resources such as the new COACH AI to help you with resumes, preparing for interviews, etc. (see link below)
- Also, there is a blog / articles with further information about navigating college and beyond
Good luck!
