Ahmad’s Answer

Zoologists spend their days watching and studying animals in the wild or in controlled settings. They collect data, analyze research, write reports, work with conservation teams, and teach the public about protecting wildlife.

Hello, Sakhile !

The great thing about careers working with animals is that there is no typical day ! There's so much variety in this career. I am not someone who works with animals, but perhaps my perspective can give you a bit more to think about.

Some of the best careers are not typical and cannot be said how they would be, let alone how your career would be. There are way too many variables and spontaneous happenings working with animals. That is why, if you are interested in a Zoology career, you must be very flexible, versatile and open minded about the work. While working with animals, you also work with people, too and will need great communications skills and sharp intuition. Even if someone in this career tells you how their workday was yesterday, that is not how your day will be, especially when you haven't even started yet.

You have indicated that you're asking this question (as an assignment ?) for "interview questions". If you really want some insight about this career, you can first focus on the different places one can work this career and the academic path one must take to learn the career.

In your country of South Africa, you could have this career working in offices, labs or outdoor settings. Your routine and activities on the job will vary based on where you work, nothing's typical and that's what makes this career super exciting. In South Africa, you can work at Zoos, Aquariums, Wildlife Centers, Environmental Parks, or the several African Safari Companies available to you. Every day in this career will be different.

As for the education that will enable you to have this career, start reading about Zoology Programs offered by Universities so you will have an idea of what you will learn. The education may not be "typical" either.

If you decide that this is more than an assignment for interview questions (if it is), you can consider seeking volunteer positions in the environments that I have mentioned. This is a way to obtain your own daily experience based on where you volunteer and something for your resume as you will obtain hands on experience in an animal environment. It'll give you the chance to see how variety filled, spontaneous and exciting this career really is.

I hope that this is something to think about and I wish you all the best moving forward with a career choice !

Karin’s Answer

Hi Sakhile,

Zoologists can work in a variety of different settings and the path they choose and how far they take their education would determine what their workdays are like. You might work in a natural habitat observing animals, or in a lab, or in an office. You might work with wildlife in nature or with animals in a zoo.

You can find jobs as a zoologist in academia, research, museums and government agencies, in zoos, wildlife management and conservation or in agriculture. You might take a bachelors degree in zoology and continue your education in veterinary medicine or paleontology. You could also get a PhD in zoology and become a professor and researcher at a university. If you work with live animals, you never know what will happen the next day. But even if you work in a different setting, there can be great variety in your daily tasks.

For more information, you can use platforms like Indeed or LinkedIn to search for zoology jobs that are currently open and what the educational requirements are. You can also use LinkedIn to find working zoologists and ask for an informational interview if you are considering this career.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!
