What do I need to do after I get my Bachelors of Science in Biology to become an Ultrasound Technician?

I could really use some help figuring this out. I currently have my Associates in Science in Allied Health and I am planning to attend Simpson University on a golf scholarship. I was given the options of attaining my BS in Biology or an Associates in Health Science and was told either of these options would help me on my path to Sonography/ Ultrasound. I have a feeling the Bachelors of science is the better option and it is what I am enrolled in right now.

Which option is better? What should I do after I obtain one of the two? Please help!

Hello, Kiley !

I do believe that you made the right choice between the two majors for your Bachelors Degree. I do want to mention that there are Bachelors Programs for Sonography, however. It's fine to major in Health Science before you do your 18 to 24 month Sonography Program.

However, your Bachelors Degree in Health Science will not prepare you for the certification, career or Licensing you need in California. So, you can obtain the Bachelors in Health Science then go for an Associate Degree or Bachelors Degree in Sonography which is required in your state of California. Diagnostic Medical Sonography is what your state requires the degree to be in before you go for certification from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

If your Health Science degree is teaching and preparing you for passing the Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) examination and a specialty exam you may be okay. If not, consult with a Sonography Program at a college and discuss what is required. Your Health Science Program will also need to prepare you for obtaining a Certified Radiologic Technologist License which is required by law in your State of California.

If by any chance you feel you were previously misdirected by a suggestion of majoring in Health Science to become a Medical Diagnostic Sonographer in California, please visit your academic counselor or a college Sonography Department as soon as you can. There are specific requirements for this career in your state, so look into this as soon as you can. There's also a difference between Ultrasound and Sonography, too, but the previous requirements I mentioned for Sonography are the same for Ultrasound in California.

Best wishes in all you do.

Between the two, the BS in Biology is the stronger, more versatile choice, especially since you’re already enrolled and it pairs well with your long-term options.

Kelvin recommends the following next steps:

Research accredited diagnostic medical sonography programs
