Hetal’s Answer

To pursue a nursing course, you should have studied Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English in Class 12, aiming for at least 45–50% marks. Most B.Sc. Nursing programs require these subjects, but some diploma courses might be a bit more flexible with their requirements.

Hello, Kenyange !

If you are not sure what subjects relate to being a nurse, you may want to first learn more about the work that nurses do so that you can have insight into the academic path and the career.

Nurses do direct medical care on patients and also should have the bedside manner to provide comfort to the patient. They are a huge support to the medical doctor if working in a hospital or clinic. They also meet daily with their medical team to tell of patient updates if they work in a hospital or nursing home, and about progress and the treatments that have been given to their patients. They write clear and accurate notes in patients' charts so that at a glance, the team can see what has been done for the patient.

Are you asking for subjects to take in Secondary School before a Nursing Program or what subjects are included in a Nursing Program ? You would not be taking a "nursing course", rather it is a nursing Program at Nursing School. If you are still in Secondary School, the subjects that align with nursing would be Biology, Chemistry and Anatomy. If you are about to enroll in a Nursing Program, the University's website will state what courses/subjects are required to fulfill the Nursing Program. Subjects that you take in Secondary School for the life sciences will be basics and in nursing school they will have an emphasis on nursing. If you know what Nursing School you will attend, go to their website and see what they recommend students have while in secondary school. You're safe taking the life and health sciences in secondary school, but all Nursing Programs and universities have specific admissions requirements that may vary from place to place.

You can go to the websites of some institutions to see what the admissions requirements are. Some places near you are Mengo School of Nursing and Midwifery, Kampala University School of Nursing and Health Sciences, Mildmay Institute of Health Sciences School of Nursing & Midwifery, Mulago School of Nursing and Midwifery, Public Health Nurses College, Kibuli School of Nursing and Midwifery, Nsambya School of Nursing and Midwifery and Lubaga Health Training Institution. Visit in person or go to their websites and read about what the requirements are.

If you need to know more about what Nurses do so that you can relate subjects to the career, you can watch some presentational videos on You Tube. I left a link below of videos you can watch.

Typically nursing programs in your country include courses in pharmacology, advanced biology, human anatomy, physiology and nursing theory, with clinical experiences in hospitals and community settings. In Nursing School you will also learn nursing procedures, infection prevention, and the nursing process.

Other key courses include Introduction to Community Health Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, and Psychology for Nurses, which help students understand health promotion, mental health care, and human behavior in illness. Some Programs in your country also offer courses in research methods, entrepreneurship, Information and
Communication Technologies and disaster preparedness. So the best way to know exactly what you'll be taking in Nursing School and best classes to take in High School is to inquire directly at the Nursing School you will attend.

I hope this helps out and I wish you all the best !

Thank you comment icon Thank you so much Michelle. I am in Year 13 right now and I am studying Biology Chemistry Psychology and IT. Kenyange
Thank you comment icon You'll have to go to Nursing School to be a Nurse, though. The courses you're taking - are they courses within a Nursing Program ? Not sure if you are in college or A Levels. Anyway, Nursing School will prepare you to become a Nurse. Michelle M.

Amanda’s Answer

Hey there!
What worked best for me was attending my local community college. I was able to complete my pre-required classes before enrolling and completing their Associate RN program. I found the workload to be manageable while working fulltime. It was also most cost effective, for me! (I paid my way through school). I continued my education and chose an online BSN program. 8 years later, I just started an MSN program. Take your time, use your resources and you can achieve your goals!

All the best,
Amanda

Hi Kenyange,

Uganda has a number of different qualifications for healthcare professions like nursing or midwifery. There are certificates, diplomas, bachelors, masters and PhD degrees (from lowest to highest qualification). The entry requirements for certificate and diploma programs were just recently adjusted, so please make sure you have the latest information.

A senior four school leaver who wants to enroll in a certificate program for nursing or midwifery needs to be at least 18 years old and have passes with at least a C in physics, chemistry, and biology and at least a D in English and mathematics in the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examination. Certificate programs last 2.5 years. In order to enroll in a diploma program (extension), applicants need to have a certificate in a nursing or midwifery, be registered with the Uganda Nursing and Midwives Council, have 2 years experience as a nurse and a principal pass in biology and at least a subsidiary pass in chemistry (UACE). Diploma extension programs run over 1.5 years.

Bachelors programs can be direct entry or extension programs and take 4 years or 3 years, respectively. For direct entry, an applicant needs to have passed UCE (at least 5 passes, see above) and have principal passes in at least biology and chemistry in the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE). For admission to an extension program, at least 5 passes at UCE and at least one principal pass at UACE (biology or chemistry) are required as well as a diploma, a valid nursing license and 2 years of working experience after the diploma are required.

Admission requirements may vary slightly between schools. Please check with nursing schools you might be interested in for the exact admission requirements so you have correct and up-to-date information. Some options for nursing schools:

Kampala International University:

Victoria University:

Aga Khan University:
https://www.aku.edu/admissions/bns-de-uganda/Pages/home.aspx

King Ceasor University:
https://kcu.ac.ug/bachelor-of-nursing

In summary, if you are still in secondary school, focus on your math and science subjects as well as English. If you have a chance to shadow or intern at a health care facility to learn about the profession that would be excellent!

I hope this helps! All the best to you!
