Well awesome interest. Here we go. While in college build a strong portfolio. Machine Learning, NLP or Robotics. Learn GitHUb. Look for an internship with tech companies, research labs, or startups that use AI. Try and decide where you want to concentrate, healthcare, robotics or finance.
It is broad, so move around and most of all have fun.

"AI" is a very broad topic. Similar to if you had said "I want to major in Computer Science". There are lots of different jobs you can do.
Think about what aspect of AI do you enjoy. Do you enjoy the technical side of things (ie. the machine learning; training and building AI models). Do you enjoy the thought leadership piece (building AI strategies), do you like the ethical side of things (social impact, data bias etc). What do you like about AI and what do you want to do.
If it's the computer science side of things, I'd definitely consider jumping into some open source projects that build with AI (you can find great projects on GitHub), and learning about how to build with AI.
Then you also want to think about what industry you want to work in. All industries are using AI, so do you want to work in technology solutions, agriculture, healthcare, finance and banking, construction etc.
All the best for your future 🙂.

You got some great answers above about how to exposure yourself to and develop AI-related technical skills. Let me add another perspective... AI - what is can do, how we use it, etc. - is changing at an absurdly fast rate. Yes, you want to try to keep up with that. But it's also important to develop the human or durable skills that 1) let you maximize the value of AI however you use it; 2) remain relevant as technology evolves and 3) may help you stand out relative to people who have focused on tech skills exclusively.
What am I talking about? Empathy, relationship building, communications, critical thinking, storytelling, cultural awareness, adaptability... How do you develop these? Sometime you develop them through the same work you do to develop AI skills - e.g. group projects, trouble shooting an AI project that doesn't workout the way you expected, etc. You can also develop them through volunteering, which challenges us to tap different skills. Or, frankly, though lots of college classes that aren't AI related. History demands critical thinking as does philosophy; psych help with perspective taking and seeing others as complex emotional beings...
It's not an either or - never has been, never will be. But the rise of AI hasn't made the need for these human skills any less, in fact I'd argue it's made it greater.

Good Day Aeman!
Planning Your Future with Your Major [Artificial Intelligence]
Focus on Technical Mastery and Adaptability by Pursuing degrees that train you to work with AI and build and manage advanced technologies.
Consider Job Growth and Demand by opting for fields with strong future job outlooks. An example is data skills in the Python language.

Balance Foundational Skills with Technology Knowledge by embracing hybrid academic paths that merge humanities, ethics, and business with AI and software engineering.
Leverage AI Literacy by getting ready for the AI revolution. Understand the technology and be a savvy user.
Rate AI Accuracy. Many AI tools fabricate information when there are gaps in information, to fulfil user requests. Another problem is when the essay or resume title does not align 100% the body of the text.
By carefully selecting a major that combines foundational human skills with emerging technology knowledge,
you can ensure a successful and relevant career in an AI-dominated future.

Hi Aeman,
1. Get to Know AI
AI is a mix of many fields:
- Math & Statistics (like algebra and probability)
- Programming (languages like Python and C++)
- Data Science & Machine Learning (algorithms and models)
- Ethics & Applications (AI safety and social impact)
Your plan should include both learning and doing.
2. University Plan (Years 1-4)
Years 1-2:
- Focus on basic computer science (programming and algorithms)
- Improve math skills (algebra, calculus)
- Learn Python and AI tools (NumPy, Pandas)
Years 2-3:
- Take AI/ML courses
- Do small projects (like chatbots)
- Join online contests (Kaggle)
- Contribute to open-source AI projects
Years 3-4:
- Choose a focus (like NLP or robotics)
- Work on a real-world project (e.g., Urdu NLP)
- Build a portfolio on GitHub
3. After Graduation
Industry Jobs in Pakistan:
- Tech companies in cities like Karachi and Lahore
- Startups in fields like e-commerce and healthcare
- Remote freelancing on platforms like Upwork
Higher Studies (MS/PhD):
- Apply for scholarships if possible
- Focus on research areas like NLP or AI in healthcare
Entrepreneurship:
- Start AI-based businesses solving local issues
- Look for funding from the government or NGOs
4. Building Skills
Online Learning:
- Free: Coursera, edX, YouTube
- Affordable: Udemy, DataCamp
Key Skills:
- Python, TensorFlow, SQL
- Data analysis (Matplotlib)
- Cloud tools (Google Cloud, AWS)
Soft Skills:
- Communication and networking
5. AI in Pakistan
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa:
- Smaller tech hubs, but remote work is an option
- Attend AI/ML events at universities in Islamabad
- Explore local opportunities in agriculture and healthcare AI
Summary:
- Build a strong foundation in math and coding
- Gain experience through projects and contests
- Choose a specialization
- Showcase your work
- Consider jobs, freelancing, further studies, or startups
Best,
Coach Bruce
