I got my nursing clinical experience during nursing school, but I'd already worked on an ambulance for several years. Getting experience as a CNA is always valuable but you may want to take a summer off. Nursing school is one of the toughest programs to pass. Your life will be just studying, school and clinical for the next 4 years.

Good luck and I wish you all my best!

Hi Alanah,

Here are the answers to your questions.

"Where did you get your clinical experience?"

I worked as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) while attending nursing school. I worked in a couple of nursing homes taking care of the elderly. I also worked as a personal caregiver in elderly peoples' homes, helping them shower, doing light housework, and running errands for them. Both of these roles helped prepare me for nursing. I took the CNA course during the summer time and it took about 2 months to finish.

"How do you manage your time and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment?"

Ways to manage your time and prioritize tasks:
1. Ask for help if you get overwhelmed.
2. Try to arrive to work a little earlier than scheduled so you can start the day relaxed rather than rushed.
3. Bring a notebook to keep track of tasks you need to do for the day, then mark them off as you complete them.
4. Complete similar tasks together. For example, if you're caring for 4 patients who all need to take medicine and all need their beds made, you can give medicines to all 4 patients first, then go back and make each one's bed.
5. Prioritize tasks based on how you are taught to prioritize them in nursing school. For example, giving a medication is more important than making a patient's bed.

"How could a senior in highschool gain more experience in this field?"

1. Volunteer at a hospital. You can do this as a high school student. You can also volunteer at nursing homes.
2. Once you finish high school, try becoming a personal caregiver or CNA. This will introduce you to medical terms and help you learn how to interact with patients, which are needed to be a nurse.

Good luck!
