Yasemin’s Answer

Hi Thomas! I actually worked on campus and off campus; I had work study and did tutoring for students on campus through the tutoring facility, in addition I worked off campus as a server in a diner. I think working on campus such as work study or other on campus positions are better because you work among other students and have more time to study and an easier commute. Usually on campus positions are easier because of these reasons; when I was tutoring or working as part of my work study I was able to complete my assignments and not rush to work as I had at times for my other server position. I do agree that class and grades come first so make sure to always keep up with your assignments but having a part time job that is manageable does help with being able to have more financial security. As a last note, I would look for on campus positions first to make sure you can keep up with school work; if you find an off campus job you like more just be sure that it is manageable with commute and classes because college can be rigorous!

Best of luck!

Classes are always top priority. Work out your school schedule first. Work-study jobs are usually on campus and can be scheduled around your classes. You can make money while being on campus.

Michael’s Answer

Most colleges have plenty of on-campus job opportunities that may be a good fit for you, whether it be for convenience purposes or your career interests or both. Some of these positions include restaurants and dining halls, intramural sports (coordinator, referee, etc.), resident assistants, athletic departments, health clinics, tutors and teaching assistants, book stores, museums, merchandise, and more. On-campus jobs typically work well with students' class and club schedules so that you can do everything you'd like to do in school. Hope this helps, good luck!

Katie’s Answer

I made money in college and gained great experience in my field through my school's cooperative education or co-op program. As a co-op student, I alternated working and going to school each semester. During my work semesters, I was lucky enough to live at home and not pay tuition or fees. I also earned considerably more than I would have at a part-time job.

As a co-op, it does take longer to graduate, and you have to be in school or working year around. Some students are able to get a full time job with their co-op company after graduation. My co-op experience was an important part of why I was hired for my first role.

Here is an article where you can learn more about being a co-op--

Katie recommends the following next steps:

Check to see if your school has a co-op program and if you can participate.
