How may years do I have to go to school to become a buisness owner?

Is the better the college I go to the more succesfull my buisness?will become.

Thank you comment icon I think there is no right or wrong answer here. You can chart your own course. I owned a business for 8 years and learned so many valuable lessons I have taken with me as my career developed. I do think an understanding of accounting is helpful as you navigate payroll, taxes, AR/AP. There are even a bunch of business workshops and community college resources that can be helpful. What college taught me in navigating time management and how to formulate a perspective was helpful for sure. Colleen Messing

Wong’s Answer

Hi Eli. To become a business owner, you do not need to go to school for a set number of years. Some people start their own businesses right after high school, while others go to college or even get a master's degree before starting. It depends on the kind of business you want to run and how much knowledge or training you think you need. Many business owners go to college to study business, marketing, finance, or a subject related to their field.

A typical college degree takes about four years. However, school is not the only way to learn. You can also gain skills through work experience, online courses, or by starting small and learning as you go.

Going to a better or more well-known college does not guarantee your business will be more successful. A good college can give you helpful resources, networking opportunities, and strong business knowledge. It can also give you access to mentors and investors. However, many successful business owners did not go to famous colleges, and some didn't go to college at all. What really matters is your idea, hard work, problem-solving skills, and ability to adapt and grow.

You can study business in college for about four years to prepare for starting your own. A degree in business or entrepreneurship will teach you important skills like management, finance, and marketing. Attending a top college can help you make connections and learn from experts but it won't guarantee success. Your ideas, hard work, and persistence are what really count in the end.

Business owner and business educator here...

No formal business degree required. However, it is vital to prepare yourself for business ownership, just like any other career. I have an MBA, and what I learned was very helpful, along with some business experience.

However, you can gain education through work experience in the exact business you want operate.

And, there is short-term training (free or low cost) offered by organizations like SBDCs and SCORE.org that are operated through the U.S. Small Business Administration.

And, add to that to have mentors who have experience operating any business, and in the type of business you would like to open and operate.

I hope this was helpful. Good luck!

Don’s Answer

Hello Eli,

There are is not a required amount of years that you need to become a business owner. It is good that you are thinking about going to college and if you are able to go to business school, I would definitely recommend because it can help you with skills needed. You need to work hard, have good leadership qualities, a vision/goal, strong communication and much more that are very important in your success. Hope you are able to have your own business one day!

Also, the success of your business is not based on what college you go to but things like what type of company do you have, if you are able to overcome adversity, how well you run your business, if your company is able to be adaptable and much more.

Thank you for your question. I am glad to know that you would like to become an entrepreneur.
Below are my suggestions :
1. Have you thought about what industry you have interest or have strength?
2. Do some analysis on the industry, e.g. entry criteria, competition status, any substitute, etc.
3. Attend industry related courses. For some industry, e.g. culinary, hair styling, etc. You might attend the course in vocational school. Alternatively, there are industry, e.g. Tech, etc., it might be better to attend the course in colleges. On the other hand, attend management courses.
4. Work in the industry some time to understand the business model and establish people network.
5. Start the business online first if possible
Hope this helps! Good Luck!
May Almighty God bless you!

Andy’s Answer

Technically, zero years. You don’t need a formal degree or a set number of years in school to start a business. Many successful entrepreneurs never went to college or dropped out before finishing. What matters most is your passion, your willingness to learn, and your ability to take action.
School can help you build useful skills—like marketing, finance, communication, and leadership—but it’s not a requirement. You can learn a lot through:

Online courses
Mentorship
Books and podcasts
Trial and error

Starting a business is more about figuring out what you love, identifying how that passion can solve a problem or serve others, and then taking the leap. You’ll probably fail at something along the way—and that’s okay. Failure is part of the process and often the best teacher.
So instead of asking how long school takes, ask:

What am I passionate about?
What problems can I solve?
What’s one small step I can take today to start?

Michelle’s Answer

The number of years of college or your college choice do not dictate your success. Your commitment to the process is the most important.

Hi Eli! A college education can be a wonderful life credential to have and provide you with a broad suite of skills and knowledge context, as well as relationships with people who will be important to you throughout your life, whether that's professionally or personally. However, it's not necessary to have a college degree to be a business owner, and although the prestige of the college or university you attend might improve some of your networking or professional options, it's far from the only consideration you can make. One educational option I might encourage you to explore are community college offerings - you can start with just one or two classes in subjects that interest you, which might be general business classes or classes on a topic related to the business you are thinking of starting.

There is also a huge body of knowledge available through Youtube for entrepreneurs, small business owners, and investors. Try searching there and find one or two content creators you like and start following them - they'll lead you to other resources.

Mary recommends the following next steps:

Search Youtube for business-owner related content
Find your local community college and browse class offerings
