I think as a artist who was once interested in drawing fashions. No, you can take classes in fashion, look at videos and learn about fashion, read books. You can perfect your skills if that is what you want. Remember skills can be approved on. As a artist I read books on new techniques one a month I mix colors to see what happens when I blend one with another. I learn different ways painting. Until I realize I made my own technique that was different from others. Desiners does the same thing they learn and tweak it so it’s their. You can not say you are a bad artist if you have put in the effect to learn and keep learning.

Ellen’s Answer

Hi Sebastian

If you are thinking of a career in fashion as a fashion designer, I think it depends on what you think defines your "poor" art skills, as labeling something as "good" or "poor" art is always relative. Remember few fashion drawings are ever put on display; their purpose is to communicate ideas or visions. As long as you can communicate your ideas or your vision in your art, then I think you should not be discouraged from pursuing a career in fashion design.

While studying art, I took some fashion illustration classes, mostly geared towards fashion advertising. In looking at the sketches of the actual fashion designers, I was always amazed at how loose and "sketchy" they often were. Also keep in mind that many of the top designers sometimes hire sketch artists for more finished drawings.

Also remember that art skills can be improved, so make sure you keep working on rendering the human figure and getting textures and details in your drawings. Your artwork will improve with effort--remember we are talking about art "skills". So if you think your art skills could use some improvement, please don't give up on improving them. Talk to your art teachers and see what advice they can give you to improve your artwork.

Finally, if you really love fashion, I'm sure you know that there are lots of other careers associated with fashion..... journalism, marketing, retail, advertising, merchandizing, critiquing, and so on.

I hope this helps. Best wishes!
