What tips for DECA if I selected communications marketing series.
I'm in DECA and I chose communications marketing because in the future I want to be a Creative Director any tips on DECA? Or in general some classes I can take for the creative director career path.

Hi Briana, I have not studied in the US so it is a bit hard for me to know what courses are available. I have worked as creative director in advertising and communication firms in a few different countries. My two cents: A lot of things you can study can become helpful in your future. From obvious stuff like marketing, advertising, branding, web, social media, video, design, to many other things that can be useful like understanding data, psychology, neuroscience, sociology, I think a lot of stuff can help you both in terms of the thinking behind the work, the understanding of your audience, and the craft itself. Of course all these would be too many classes to take, but I am sharing my thoughts in case that helps you decide or choose from within a large group of options. The way I see it, almost anything you can learn will become helpful. Just open your mind to it. Best of luck

Hi Briana. I ran an ad agency for many years. We lived or died on the ability to generate top creative communications for clients. Sometimes we had great ideas , mostly ok stuff however. Two winners include a catch phrase for a library fund drive which said "Give to the Library, because a little knowledge is a dangerous thing". Another we had for a group of downhill ski clients. That one was "Come ski the white open spaces".
Eventually I ran into a book that gave us unlimited, new, good ideas ON DEMAND. Think of it as ' Creative Director in a Box". It's called Thinkertoys: A Handbook of Creative-Thinking Techniques, by Michael Michalko. Fantastic book for getting ideas. Use it and you will shine in interviews!!!
So that's my top recommendation. Always room in the profession for new folks with gonzo fresh ideas.
Good luck Briana.

Take online journalism or participate in yearbook staff. I was not in DECA, so I can't speak to that but you may want to invest some time in any graphic arts opportunities including online, photography, and designing programs. Communication also includes big things such as campaigns, but you want to get the basics like font style, colors, ad placement and identifying your audience down now. Good luck.
