Here are a few more important things to consider for your college journey:
- Plan your trips home: Before choosing a college, think about how often and how you will travel back home. If you're too far away to go home during breaks, make sure you know where you'll stay if campus housing is closed.
- Have a card: Whether it's a credit, debit, or cash card, many places don't accept cash anymore. But always keep some emergency cash on hand for places that don't take cards.
- Special occasion clothes: You might attend a dance, need to dress professionally for a class or job presentation, or go to a funeral. Be prepared with the right attire.
- Addresses: Keep addresses of people you might want to visit or send mail to.
- Budget wisely: Make sure your current funds or income cover all your planned (and some unplanned) expenses.
- Important documents: Bring your birth certificate or passport. Employers will need to see the original if you get a job.
- Warm clothing: If you're going to a cold area, pack warm clothes, hats, mittens, and boots.
- Support and blessings from loved ones: Keep contact information for those who care about you. It will help you through tough times.
Good luck on this exciting journey ahead!

Think essentials for emergencies. Emergency everything -- who do you call? Who has the right to view your medical records? Keep all vital information in two places, one of which should be easily accessible to someone you trust. Which is the nearest clinic? Do you have a spear key and a medical pack? Who is on a speed dial? Have some safety cash on hand, have a photocopy of all your IDs, and memorize your SSN and blood type. Carry a pepper spray and be aware of which medications do not mix well. Have a list of meds you are taking or allergies you have. Lastly, do not depend on strangers and thoroughly vet your friends.
