Focus on getting good at math, especially algebra and pre-calc. Starting with Python is a great idea. You don't need to be an expert; just get comfortable with loops, variables, and problem-solving. Try building a simple project, experiment with an Arduino, or take apart an old computer to learn. Don't worry about knowing everything right now; that's what your degree is for. Just be eager to learn and solve problems, and you'll do great!

Hi Laurence,

Thanks for your question. My son has just completed his degree in computer engineering from a university in Australia and so I am using his background to answer your question.

1. Each university has their basic requirements of subjects a student must undertake to be eligible for an degree. So check with the universities websites what are the subject requirements. I see English, Maths (different levels) as the mandatory subjects one should have studied in senior high school.
2. Check what are the other mandatory requirements e.g. you need to obtain certain percentage marks to be eligible or need to sit for an entrance exam or need to submit an essay or any other criteria they may have.
3. Computer science is a very practical subject wherein you will learn more thru hands on experience. So don't get into the race to finish the units but rather have organized, disciplined approach to have 3-4 units per semester that gives you enough time for hands on activity.
4. College life is about education but also about networking, bonding with your friends and having fun. Balance is important. The friendship you will form may be for lifetime.
5. Your interests in activities like sports need to continue in your college life. Don't be a book worm. Balance is important as I said earlier.

We have lots of AI tools these days which help you to summarize your lectures. Use such powerful means to study in a smarter way. Apps like "Notion" help you manage/keep track of your activities, due assignments and organize things better.

Hope this helps. Wish you the best in the next important phase of your life.

Regards,

Sandeep

Focus most on English and math. English so you can understand problems quickly and communicate with others. Math so you have a good background for university math courses. Think about and develop your logical thinking to solve problems. Look for opportunities to work in teams and think about whether you prefer to be a leader or a follower.

Talk to your teachers, advisors, parents and other students about managing stress and coursework and building confidence. Practice talking to anyone and initiating conversations with adults including with your parents and relatives.

Think about your interests related to computer engineering. What do you want to use computer engineering to do? What are you good at? How do these come together into something that can work for you? Maybe take another science course related to your interests.

What do you like to do to relax and get away from stress? Sports? Play games? Read? Manage stress by working hard at coursework and getting it done at the best time of day for you. Then relax for a while and do some other things that you like to do.

Hi Laurence,
Your interest in computer engineering is commendable. Mathematics and physics are the foundational subjects for any engineering course. Being good at them puts you in a good stead to successfully pursue a course in computer engineering. The other important subjects include chemistry, computer applications, graphics etc.
A work ethic of excellence allows you to be at your best in all your endeavors.
Mentorships and internships are important in providing opportunities for hands-on experience. Every available opportunity should be utilized.
Approaching a subject matter from first principles usually makes it easier to master complex fields of study. It also improves your ability to remember. This way, you can minimize the risk of stress.
Balancing different interests is influenced by your ability to prioritize, organize yourself & your activities as as well as managing your time effectively. Good planning skills are paramount. The good news is that all these skills can be developed by an individual as long as the right level of interest and commitment exist.
