Learn some advanced room recording techniques. Then play back the recordings to your class. They will learn how to sound better to an audience.

Music educators are amazing people! As someone who has been involved in music and as a band parent, I know the lasting impact you can have on a student's life. Here are a few tips from my experience. First, make sure the band room is a safe and welcoming place for everyone. Students will always remember how they felt there, especially those who might be neurodivergent or facing challenges elsewhere. Second, lead by example. If you teach kindness and dedication, make sure you show it too. Students notice more than you might think, and your actions build their trust. Lastly, make it fun! Celebrate all achievements, big or small. Set goals that are both reachable and challenging, and celebrate when they're met. Best of luck, your future students are fortunate to have someone as thoughtful as you!

Ellen recommends the following next steps:

Keep a journal of things your current educators are doing that you'd like to replicate
Also keep note of situations where things could have been done differently and learn from them

Hi Sofia! It's exciting to hear your ambition and desire to work with middle school students! Middle school age, when you're transitioning from a child to a teenager can be a confusing and difficult time. As an introvert, I gravitated to music starting in elementary school. When I started middle school I was playing the flute, but wanted to expand to other instruments. I was blessed to have a teacher who let me experiment with different instruments (which, at that time students were allowed to take instruments home to practice). I enjoyed playing in the concert band. Whether it's a concert band, a jazz band, a rock band or any other type of group where musicians are playing together, the door is wide open for musical creativity! Follow your passion for music that excites you personally and share that with your students! Also be open to musical ideas and passions that they want to share. In the mean time, focus on the basics and requirements needed to get a degree to be a music teacher. Keep following your passion for music and also remember who inspired you to want to teach music in middle school. God bless you on your journey!
