How do you lead in the work place? How is leadership in the workspace transferable to the court room? And what shaped your idea of a leader? #Fall25
I want to go into patent law because I think it is an appropriate combination of my skills in engineering and in law. I want to understand what characteristics I need to have beyond these skills in order to excel.

Hi Archer,
This is a very interesting question. As humans, we are born with different potentialities: technical, managerial and leadership. The education system often picks leadership potential early in one's life: people who become student leaders are as a result of this process. Organizations often spend huge amounts of resources in providing leadership training to their employees in order to improve team and employee productivity.
Leaders are often identified during team processes especially during challenging times - they are influencial, inspirational, foster team spirit, provide direction and support weaker members of the team even in an environment where formal leadership is reasonably strong.
Organizations often run psychometric tests on employees that reach a predetermined minimum level of authority that aims to identify their strengths and weakness so their strengths can be optimally utilized and training solutions provided to improve their areas of weakness. Good leaders are identified through this method. Those employees whose roles require leadership skills but are deficient in them receive the relevant leadership training to improve their effectiveness. Excellence at the workplace can earn one a leadership role.
Good leaders are visionary, courageous, trustworthy and honest. They build strong teams by fostering team spirit and empowering members. They communicate effectively, are role models, effectively resolve conflicts and often lead from the front (some situations require them to lead from behind - a good leader identifies such contingencies correctly & timeously). Leadership requires one to be assertive, fair and empathetic.
Leadership skills are required in all aspects of human life and can be acquired through formal training and experiential learning.
A sound engineering background is obviously an added advantage for a lawyer who handles engineering patents. Services of forensic engineers are often required when gathering technical evidence of engineering nature required by courts of law.
