How Can I Start Research As a First Year In College ?
I am a freshman at UC Santa Cruz and am a proposed Bio Molecular Engineering Major. Usually, it is easier to find available research being a second year and up. My goal is to get my bachelors in three years so of course I want to start research/internships early. I want to get ahead, to start my future early.

Hello again, Gabrealle !
You are a freshman in college, as a proposed major at UC Santa Cruz for Biomolecular Engineering and intend to get a self-directed Bachelors Degree in three years instead of four years. You are ASKING how to do research.
You are designing your own college system and if you insist on doing so, you will need to present a proposal about it to your Academic Counselor for approval. You may need to take a proficiency exam to see if you can by pass and overpass the regular college system to do what you want. A huge part of being in college is being able to follow the programs, directions and requirements. If you are unable to do this, you really need to consult with the Academic Advisory office as doing things the way you want, not in line with protocol for your courses or a program can lead to issues.
You do not do research until you know how to do it, it is a direct assignment from one of your courses and you have a very specific topic and reason for doing the research. Your research ad hoc will not be valid as it will not be connected to or directed by the University. You say that you want to do a Bachelors in 3 years, not 4, but you do not know how to do research and giving advice encouraging you to go out of the university's guidelines and do whatever you want when you want is not to be encouraged.
My advice is still to do your Bachelors Degree in the standard four years, pay heed to how college is and what's happening there. You will learn research by courses you have that require term paper assignments. It may not always be for biomolecular engineering, but for other subjects. Term papers remain a standard requirement in many college courses, including general education and major specific classes, as they are seen as a way to develop research, critical thinking, and writing skills. Try not to rush things and do take things a step at a time. A very large part of college success is following the guidelines of the college and your individual course lessons. Also, Internships are usually given to students in their 3rd and 4th year in their Bachelors, not when they do not have foundational knowledge of the subject.
I am very happy to give you advice, but you can't expect complete strangers to tell you how to go out of bounds of your college requirements, creating your own guidelines. You will have to consult with college staff about doing anything that is not usually done. Wanting to do things that modify your path will reflect on your reputation as a student, also. Remember that at UC Santa Cruz, you're going to need to have a high GPA in your proposed major courses this semester in order to declare it a Major.
I hope that all works out for you !
