Navigating from Industry to a Future Applied Physics PhD

As an Engineering Physics applicant at UCSD who is highly motivated to maximize both undergraduate research and industry internships to navigate tight financials, I am specifically targeting a career in quantum hardware, semiconductors, or nanotechnology. These fields are where I plan to work for five to ten years post-graduation to build a financial foundation before pursuing my PhD and based on current market shifts, what specific technical roles or specialized skill sets should I prioritize right now that will remain high-demand in the future while providing the rigorous experience necessary to keep me competitive for a top-tier graduate program a decade from now?

How do I know if the major I have is right for me ?

I am a Marine Science student concentrating in Oceanography with a double minor in Biochem and chem, attending the University of New England. I am a first year and this would be my fourth time switching my majors and minors around. I have always been interested in the ocean, but there is a part of me that is still interested in criminology. My original plan was Marine Science and Political Science, but that didn't work out. So how do I know if I am choosing the right path, if I'm enjoying my classes and helping with oceanography research? #Spring26

How should I go about joining a research group or project?

I'm about to go into my sophomore year at Penn State's main campus as a declared Computer Engineer and I really want to start researching; I also am obtaining a minor in Quantum Information Science and Engineering. I am most interested in the hardware side of computer engineering and want to learn more about photonics and its applicability to circuitry. Seeing as there are no professors researching that here, how should I go about starting a project for that or finding someone else who is interested?

I’m 16 years old and attend MCC and my current degree is in Communications, and I’m graduating next semester, and afterwards I want to study biology or something that involves being in a lab. I’ve been wanting to start gaining experience now before I make this decision when I graduate. Does anyone know any good internships or jobs that a teen can do to gain experience in Mesa, Arizona?

How can I structure my next steps in a way that builds a strong, scholarship-worthy profile?

I’m a Biochemistry graduate with a strong interest in applying for Master's programs abroad. I have basic hands-on experience with fundamental biochemical techniques such as PCR, DNA extraction, and gel electrophoresis. However, I’m looking to strengthen my academic and professional profile to increase my chances of securing scholarships. I’ve completed several online courses through platforms like Coursera, but since I opted for the free versions, I don’t have certificates to show for them. I would appreciate guidance on: What specific skills (lab-based or computational) I should focus on improving? Are there any online internships or volunteer projects I can apply to that are relevant to biochemistry or bioinformatics? Where can I find internships in Islamabad, especially ones considered relevant to my field? How can I structure my next steps in a way that builds a strong, scholarship-worthy profile? I’ve previously completed an internship in the biology department of a university in Islamabad, and I’m eager to take on further experiences that can help me grow in the research and academic space. I’d be truly grateful for any advice, resources, or structured pathway you can suggest.

How do PhD admission officers think about an undergraduate who worked in two research labs simultaneously?

I am currently a rising sophomore who started in a genetics lab in March. I found a really interesting opportunity to work in a biomedical engineering lab, and their position description requires me to learn many software skills which will be helpful for my bioinformatics track. Assuming I can handle the workload, would adding a second lab strengthen my PhD application? Or might it raise concerns about my ability to commit deeply to one research lab?
