Should I try and apply for a dual-degree program?

I feel as though it is a very good program that could open my career to many different job opportunities and if I don't want to go through on one side, I could go through on the other which seems extremely enticing. I feel as though the only real downside to it is the fact that I will have double the course load which is extremely hard.

How do PhD admission officers think about an undergraduate who worked in two research labs simultaneously?

I am currently a rising sophomore who started in a genetics lab in March. I found a really interesting opportunity to work in a biomedical engineering lab, and their position description requires me to learn many software skills which will be helpful for my bioinformatics track. Assuming I can handle the workload, would adding a second lab strengthen my PhD application? Or might it raise concerns about my ability to commit deeply to one research lab?

Should I get my PhD in Sociology or Criminology ?

So I got my bachelors degree in Sociology, with a lot of my research centering injustices within the criminal justice system. I am really interested in analyzing the CJS as an institution and looking at the ways it discriminates against different intersectional identities. I like looking at social justice issues and justice reform. Recently, I have been looking into getting a PhD as I hope to become a professor. I have talked with three professors about this, two sociology professors one english professor, and two of them(the english prof and a soc prof) believe I should pursue a PhD in criminology instead of sociology. They say this because A) sociology is incredibly competitive B) Sociology is being targeted right now under the Trump administration. They say I'll be more marketable if I do Criminology instead. The issue is, I don't want to be tied down to crime. I am incredibly interested in learning about all the issues with the criminal justice system and learning about ways we can fix it and reform our justice system. I find recividism to be very interesting as well, as well as issues in policing. However, I am interested in looking at these things through a sociological lens. I love sociology, I love how diverse it is, and I just feel that is where my heart is. However, I'll be very honest to say my understanding of Criminology is limited to the one entry level criminology course I took in my undergrad. Idk I just don't know what to do, and I'm scared if I pick sociology I'll regret it down the road if I can't find a job being a sociology professor. What should I do???

How to navigate the unfamiliar and demanding nature of counseling school age children without falling apart?

Hi there, I am currently completing my second/last internship for my Master's in Mental Health Counseling and Art Therapy. My internship last year was with adults with acute and chronic mental illness. This year, I landed a last-minute placement with a nonprofit organization that places graduate Interns in schools. I am placed at an elementary school as a school counselor, however, I have never worked with school-age children in any capacity. I have a brief experience as a preschool assistant and have taken multiple developmental psych classes. The nature of the internship is going to be very hands-off (me doing everything from ground zero) from asking for consent forms to pulling students out of classrooms for a session which is putting me in a vulnerable place. I am not a very assertive individual. How to navigate the unfamiliar and demanding nature of this new experience without falling apart? P.S. I am expected to begin next week. Thank you!

Letters of Recommendation

I have just started my grad school application for Genetic Counseling but am not very confident regarding the 3 letters of recommendation I need to gather. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and my own social anxiety, I have had a hard time making any connections with professors. Classes have around 300 students so they have little to no memory of me. I've e-mailed the grad program about if letters of recommendations from my supervisor at work could be considered (currently an HR intern). I have also reached out to a professor I recently had last Spring. Is there anything else you would recommend for me to do?

Should I reach out to my prospective grad schools via email and introduce myself/express interest?

I am graduating this December and will be applying to grad schools later this fall. I am wondering if I should email the schools I am interested in beforehand and introduce myself and express interest? I will be applying to psychology PhD and PsyD programs and am wondering if this might help the admissions board remember my name, which could ultimately provide an advantage? If this is a good idea, would I reach out via email or phone, maybe letter? Should it be directed to the board of admissions in general or to a specific person? What would I write in the email/letter or say on the phone? Does this seem like a good idea or would it come across a little overboard and groveling? Any feedback is so greatly appreciated! Thank you! #PhDpsychprograms #gradschool #graduation #emailinginterest

What is one lie that you wish to dismiss about graduate school and the grad student experience?

I recently earned my bachelor's and will be starting a doctoral program in August. I've been hearing rumors left and right about grad school in general. They range from dissertations being a mandatory 200 pages, how you have to say goodbye to your social life, how grad students have the same employability rate as undergraduate students, and many more. I'm just curious as to what lies you were told about grad school, and if you could dismiss them for the general public. #college #collegerumors #grad #gradlife #gradlies #gradschool #gradschoolrumors #gradstudent #gradstudentrumrs #JULY20 #lies #school #schoolrumors
