How do I get an internship at a pharmacy as a high school junoir?

I am a high school junior and I want to pursue the pharmaceutical field. Specifically, I want to be a compound pharmacist and I was wondering if anyone knows how I can get an internship at a pharmacy as a high school junior and if I even can.

Hi, Evie !

A junior in High School is not qualified for an Internship in a Pharmacy. Internships are given to Pharmacy students while in a Doctor of Pharmacy Program.

A good path for you to take in high school would be to take as many Chemistry and Biology classes that your school offers. You can then major in Chemistry for your Bachelors Degree. You would then enroll at a School of Pharmacy. In general pharmacy school is three to four years in duration depending on the college. You would perhaps be eligible for an Internship during Pharmacy School in your third or fourth year there. You will learn how to be a Pharmacist once you attend Pharmacy School. Most of your neighborhood pharmacists do not do compound pharmacy. People find compound pharmacists by using the Alliance for Pharmacy Compounding website.

Something that you could do now would be to join extracurriculars at your high school, like a Chemistry Club. Become familiar with chemicals and what they do. Start learning the Periodic Table of Elements and participate in any project a science club may do at your school.

If you really want to get a 7 year head start, you can start learning the names of Medications and what they do and what they are for. You can borrow or buy books that will help you learn about prescription drugs. A couple of books that may introduce you would be The Pill Book : The Illustrated Guide to the Most-Prescribed Drugs in the United States, and The PDR Pocket Guide to Prescription Drugs.

There is a lot to learn at college and then in Pharmacy School, so take things a step at a time. It's perfectly okay to not be involved in pharmaceuticals while in high school. You will get the standard pharmacy education for your Doctorate Degree and you'd have to find a college that includes teaching compound pharmacy. It's a good thing to know how to do but not common enough to make a living from, so your best bet is to become a standard pharmacist that knows how to do compound pharmacy.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !
