What steps should I take after high school to pursue a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) career?
I'm a 12th grader interested in becoming a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM). I love helping people, serving others, and caring for babies. My goal is to create a safe, trusting environment for mothers and newborns, which is why I’ve chosen CNM as my career path.

Hi Naomi - Your first step would be to pursue your Registered Nurse (RN) degree. I see you're in Louisiana - I believe both Northwestern and LSU have fabulous RN programs! If cost is a concern for you, there are many scholarship opportunities available (for example: https://bhw.hrsa.gov/programs/nurse-corps/scholarship/apply) and your High School's career counselor may be able to provide you with insight on grants/scholarships specific to you and your region.
Once you complete an accredited nursing program, you'll want to take the NCLEX-RN examination. This exam will earn you a certification to practice as an RN in your state. From there, that's when you'll start narrowing your focus to Midwifery by applying to a to Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) program (https://www.amcbmidwife.org/). Although this is considered a Grad Program, there are some online CNM programs that may allow you more flexibility if, by this time, you are working full-time as an RN. Once you've completed the program, you'll take the CNM Exam and then apply for licensure!
