What skills or qualities do you believe separate a good cosmetologist from a truly exceptional one, and how can a student start developing those early in their training?

I am going to cosmetology school in December and I have heard after school some struggle to find clients and work. I would like to know how I can be successful early in this field in order to grow in my career.

Alison’s Answer

Hi Jamie,

I'm Alison, and I've been a master stylist for over 30 years. Here's what I believe sets the best stylists apart: making everyone feel comfortable in your chair, no matter who they are. Being empathetic and a good listener is crucial. While technical skills are important, many successful stylists thrive because they connect well with clients and create a welcoming atmosphere. On the other hand, some talented artists harm their careers with negative behavior.

Aim to be consistent in your work and kind in your interactions while honing your skills. Remember, hairdressing is an art. You either have the natural talent or you don't. A true artist takes the basics and develops their unique style. It's like painting; classes help, but talent shines through.

Focus on mastering the basics. Pay attention to details like using a 45-degree angle with every cut, which will make your work stand out. These small details make a big difference. Be the stylist who truly connects with clients. Take time to understand what they want, even if they can't express it well. By listening and getting to know them, you'll make them happy every visit.

Wishing you the best in your career!

Jamie’s Answer

Hi Jenna, I'm not a cosmetologist, but I do use their services, so I'll try to help. What sets apart a good cosmetologist from an exceptional one is not just their technical skills but also their personal skills. Building strong relationships with clients is crucial. Understand their preferences and reasons for visiting you. Are they preparing for a special event or just maintaining a routine? If it's a special event, what kind of event is it? What's the dress code? If someone plans to wear a gown with a sweetheart neckline or a chunky necklace, you could suggest hairstyles that highlight those features, like wearing hair up or down, with or without waves. Also, if a client loves a particular color, consider what other colors would complement it. If your client is very active and busy, recommend styles that are easy to maintain. Exceptional cosmetologists consider all these factors and truly listen to their clients.

Jamie recommends the following next steps:

Learn and practice color theory
Practice relationship building
