How do students stay up to date with scholarships and if they have won one or not? How do traditional students-athletes change to the life of college athletics?

Sports are a huge part of my life and I am not me without them. I also have an interest in psychology so I plan to have a minor in that.

One thing you might do, in regards to monitoring current scholarships, is with the College Foundation.

Much of successful scholarship attainment, has to do with where you look for the scholarships. They can come from two primary sources, either private or public. One area people might not know about is the College Foundation option, at local colleges and universities.

College Foundations connect many of their scholarships to specific subjects, activities, majors, ethnicities and classifications. These are normally scholarships, that are supported by private individuals or businesses.

You might find scholarships for students who are first generation college students (neither parent has a college degree), students who are focusing their major on teaching, science subjects, engineering or radiology, or students who might be of a certain ethnicity.

Most of the time potential applicants can find nearly anything that fits into a classification or subject that defines them or their future goals.

All colleges and universities have foundations that offer scholarships. I would log into the website (of the college you are attending or wishing to attend), and research the ones which apply to you and your particular interests.

I had a few hurdles, when I initially went to college and also pursued athletics. But several things I learned included the following:

To be a successful college athlete, you must be able to balance your commitment to your sport with excellent academic performance by managing your time effectively.

This includes becoming proficient at utilizing campus resources. Many athletic programs have all kinds of educational resources to help athletes. This includes advisors, who specialize in helping the athletes get into the right classes and balancing those classes with competition and practice schedules.

These advisors also assist with setting clear goals for academics. If the athletes need help, they normally are provided access to tutors and other academic support staff, to assist with classes. So definitely utilize all the academic resources the athletic department has for you

You must also be willing to cultivate your leadership and teamwork skills.

This means being able to communicate with coaches and professors, take care of your physical health through consistent training and recovery, and manage your personal brand and reputation.

And definitely, make sure that you understand and meet your institution's academic requirements to maintain your athletic eligibility. I knew athletes, who did not track their progress or grades, and ultimately became ineligible during their tenure at the college that I attended.

Hi Raegan,

Although keeping track of scholarships can first seem daunting, most students are able to do so through using a combination of resources and routines. It's important to regularly check both your student portal and the email that colleges often provide you. To stay organized, many students also use a basic spreadsheet or apps like Scholly, Going Merry, or Naviance to keep track of deadlines and applications.

The transfer to college sports is undeniably an adjustment; time management becomes a true skill, practices are earlier, and the schedule is more demanding. However, most student-athletes say that after a few weeks, they settle into a pattern. You can manage classes, training, recovery, and social life with the assistance of coaches, academic advisers, and sports support personnel.

Additionally, being interested in psychology may be quite beneficial because it can help you become a better student and athlete by helping you understand motivation, stress, and mental performance. Student-athletes typically adjust more quickly than they anticipate when they have solid routines, support, and communication.

Best wishes!
