Building a personal brand, especially in a creative field like fashion design, is all about consistency and perception. A brand isn’t just a logo; it’s the specific "feeling" people get when they see your work or hear your name. To start, you need to decide how you want to be known: Do you want to be seen as highly professional and serious, or perhaps edgy and avant-garde? Once you define that, ask for honest feedback to see how people actually perceive you right now. It is rare that perception perfectly matches your reality, but identifying that gap shows you exactly what you need to work on. From here on out, be conscious of every action you take—from how you present your sketches to how you interact with peers—because every choice you make adds a brick to the foundation of your brand.

Questions to ask yourself when building your brand:
The Emotional Goal: "What are the first three words I want someone to think of when they see my designs?"

The Gap Analysis: "How would my classmates describe my work style right now, and does that match my goals?"

The Consistency Check: "Does my social media, my portfolio, and my personal style all tell the same story?"

The Value Prop: "What is the one thing I do differently than every other designer in my class?"

Candelaria’s Answer

Hi! That’s exciting! When you’re building your brand, the goal is to create something authentic and memorable. Here are some questions that can help you to get started:

1. Understand Your Identity
What values do you want your brand to stand for? What inspires you as a designer? What message or purpose drives your work?

2. Identify Your Strengths and Style
What makes your brand different? What design skills or techniques do you naturally lean toward?

3. Define Your Audience
Who are you designing for? What problems is your brand solving? How would you describe your brand’s ideal customer?

4. Explore Your Visual Language & Voice
What colors, textures, etc represent your brand’s vision? Does your brand feel bold, minimal, playful, elegant, or something else?
How does your brand communicate? soft and artistic, strong and confident, expressive?

5. Inspiration (Without Copying)
Before developing your brand, it helps to explore: Creating mood boards (Pinterest it's a good tool) , Studying trends but filtering them through your brand’s point of view, Keeping a sketch book for ideas (Any idea can work , don’t throw them away too early! lol )

6. My favorite final step: get feedback
Ask friends or family: Are they reading your brand correctly? Is it clear and easy to pronounce? Is your brand memorable? Does it give them the feeling you intended?

Best of luck,
Candelaria
