Hi, I am a freshman at Baruch College, majoring in marketing. Im having a hard time standing out in the fashion marketing community. What can I do to make me be seen for what I am good at even if its similar to other people?

Im having trouble having others see me in my own eyes, I know what I am good at, but I dont think others see it. Everyone else seems to be seen more than me, what can I do.

Hello, Lizi !

I am glad you came here for advice about this because I think I can shed some light and ideas about it !

Since you've chosen one of the best colleges for Business in NYC, Baruch, instead of fashion school when Fashion Merchandising is your career goal, your path is taking on a more corporate and general study and not focused on fashion. A huge part of what gives the students at fashion schools an edge is the opportunities they have to fully immerse themselves in the New York City Fashion world. But guess what ? You can too !

You'll have to start applying your general marketing and business savvy into the fashion community and it may be easy because you're in NYC. It is going to be crucial that you start attending New York Fashion Week. Be where fashion students go.

You'll also need to start going to exclusive afterparties, networking events, and influencer meet-ups that are part of the broader Fashion Week experience, offering opportunities to connect with celebrities, designers, and high profile industry people. It'll be important to attend lesser known events and smaller shows organized by emerging designers or student groups, which are often listed on platforms like Eventbrite and are open to the public. As if that isn't enough, there's also fashion industry mixers, designer meetups, and events hosted by organizations such as the Council of Fashion Designers of America and IMG. Specific events like the Fashion Week Brooklyn X A/N/A "THE ASIAN VANGUARD" After Party and the First Annual Fashion & Beauty Mixer provide further opportunities for professional connection. I am assuming that these events or groups have a social media page or website and that could lead you to know how to connect with them.

Create a profile on Linked In and connect with and or follow as many students attending The Fashion Institute of Technology and Parsons School of Design. Also follow all the Fashion Schools in NYC. Read their posts for possible events to attend. When doing a Marketing Project for Baruch, connect with the fashion students to offer to make their line the subject of your project. Describe your title on your profile as "Marketing Student at Baruch College for the Fashion Industry".

As you move along at Baruch and are assigned projects to do, make them centered on fashion. In other words, say you are assigned to make a business plan and marketing campaign for a fictional business - make it for a clothing line. Hopefully you'll get projects that allow you to pick the business you can focus on.

Baruch is known for Internship Placement for students in their Junior and Senior year. You may want to speak with your professor regarding possibly making a connection for an internship in the fashion industry. It's perfectly fine that you're taking a generalized path academically. You can supplement it with the fashion networking part off campus.

Like all other careers, it takes time to build a presence whether you're a student or after graduation. Give it time. Take the knowledge about business you are learning at Baruch and blend that with the networking aspect of fashion to become familiar with the industry you one day hope to work in. That may just be the best way to do it.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the very best !

Hello, Lizi!

It's a bit difficult to tell what you are asking. So, I assume you're either asking for art advice or social advice. I have provided both below:

Art Advice = So, from artist to artist, I think the best advice is to do more research. As you know, art is a learning process. You have to constantly try new things and innovate, but the lucky part of it is that there's plenty of artists surrounding you that you can draw inspiration from. Ask other people what they think could help your work stand out. Look at other people's works and write down the things you like or don't like about them.

Social Advice = Trying to stand out in college is overwhelming sometimes -- especially when it feels like you are a speck of dust in the wind. Humans are strange. They're hard to predict, and the truth is that you do not know what they think of you. They might notice you every day and not know what to say to you. They might be too shy to talk to you. They might expect you to talk. It's all unpredictable. So, instead of worrying about what others think of you, keep being who you are. If you truly are good at what you do, people will start noticing you naturally. If they don't, then that's their loss. It's not a you problem. Even the infamous Vincent Van Gogh wasn't acknowledged for his works until later in his lifetime. Focus on being the best you can be, because that's something you can control. I believe in you.

Best of luck!
