Hi Haley!
There are a lot of options in the media and journalism fields. You may want to consider whether you want to be a generalist or focus on specific things. Do you want to work for a small company where you need to do a little bit of everything or a larger company that allows for more specificity and a narrower role scope.
Even when it comes to writing there are various opportunities. Do you want to write scripts for video, press releases, and articles? Do you want to focus on internal communications (within in a company or organization) or external, like marketing to customers?
Take advantage of opportunities that your school (guidance counselors or nonprofit organizations like Career Development Council) provide for students to attend business panels, shadowing, and other career exploration opportunities.

Hi Haley,
There are so many opportunities in media and journalism! Beyond newspapers, radio, TV, and marketing agencies, there's an exciting area you might not have considered—trade journals. There are thousands of them in the U.S., and they could be just what you're looking for.
Start by thinking about what you enjoy. Whether it's bike riding, basketball, ancient history, TV and movie production, rockets, animation, bees, knitting, fashion design, bungee jumping, building things, photography, art, or flying—there's a trade journal for it. These publications offer news, trends, and insights for professionals in specific industries. They feature articles by experts, targeted ads, job listings, and conference details, keeping you informed and connected in your field.
What are you passionate about? Right now why not try finding the trade journal(s) that match your interests! Google 'trade journals for _______' You'll be surprised.
For instance I just Googled 'trade journals for marketing' and this is what I found: Consumption Markets & Culture
Journal of Advertising
Journal of Consumer Psychology
Journal of Consumer Research
Journal of Hospitality Marketing & Management
Journal of International Marketing
Journal of Marketing
Journal of Marketing Research
Journal of Public Policy & Marketing
Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science
Journal of Vacation Marketing
Marketing Letters
Marketing Science
Psychology & Marketing
They all need journalists.
Good luck, Haley! We really need talented people like you out here.

Hi Haley, Media and Journalism is a fantastic field if you love learning on your own and want to understand more about the world. You need to be flexible with your skills and ready to change because the industry evolves quickly. The impact of AI on this field is still uncertain. I began in print journalism at a big international newspaper, which later became a leader in digital journalism. It was all about adapting and using your skills differently. I worked on international, national news, and feature stories. You need to specialize in certain areas but also be open to changes in what you cover. When the newspaper went digital, I moved into book editing for Jones and Bartlett Learning, focusing on topics like cybersecurity and renewable energy. Then, I shifted to business writing and became a managing editor for a business association magazine, thanks to connections I made. Networking is crucial; I met my employer through a teacher at my children's homeschooling group. Now, I work as a writer, editor, advisor, and publications manager in a major telecom cybersecurity division. Every job I've had has led to the next one, from waitressing, where I learned time management, to managing publications for a large company. No experience is wasted. For example, I got hired at a major newspaper because I wrote book reviews in college. My review of "Tofu Madness" for my university's magazine helped me land a job at a major Boston newspaper. Every piece of writing you do can open doors to new opportunities in the industry.
