What is veterinary school like?

I'm in highschool and would like to become a veterinarian. Is vet school like highschool where there very little hands on work?

Hi, Craig. Vet school is quite different from high school, in that there is a great deal of hands on work, especially in the 4th year,. which is 100% hands on in most programs. The exact curriculum varies, but typically the first year has more basic biology and medicine classes (the most like high school, you will spend time in lecture halls and take exams), and the last year has no classes and 100% of your time is spent working in the clinic at the veterinary teaching hospital or at internships and externships that you arrange at other institutions. However, even in your freshman year, there will be lab classes that are very hands-on, for example anatomy class. Surgery classes, with hands-on labs, typically happen in the 2nd and 3rd years. You will also have pathology classes where you learn to read histology slides and conduct necropsy (animal autopsy).

In case you weren't aware, in between high school and vet school, you also need a 4 year college degree. I recommend you visit the website of the vet school for Colorado to see more specifics about their curriculum.
