How do I research/interview a career?

I'm a high school sophomore IT student, and I was assigned to research in-depth and (hopefully) conduct an interview (via email, over Google Meet, or on the phone) with someone in that specific position. The position im working on is IT Technical writing. Any recommendations on where to get started? Where/How do I conduct an interview (preferably not in person)? And what are the key components I need to research for this position?

Thanks!

Hi Aiden,

You may want to consider reaching out to some corporations that may have college recruiting events or support local colleges. They may have opportunities to have their employees interviewed as part of those organized efforts.

Ahead of reaching out to them, you want to make sure you have your ask of them (the corporation) developed and concise so it's direct and has a higher likelihood of returning a response. You may also want to include a request for other avenues for you to explore if they are aware of any that could lead you to other resources.

Good luck!

Great question and an easy way to do this is to start with ChatGPT. Ask what skills you need for IT technical writing. ChatGPT can also help you prepare for an interview by proving the job description and ask for questions to help you prepare for an interview.

An IT technical writer could be a business analyst role where you design user stories and write technical requirements for developers. You can look up these roles to find out more too.

The first thing would be to be clear on the skills that are required for the position for which you are researching. As an example:
1. Having a strong grasp of the language in which you would like to pursue technical writing is the primary skill to have.
2. The topic on which you are going to do technical writing should be clear to you, and you should add the content based on practical findings or testing, so that the content that you share through your writing is as correct as possible.
3. You should stick to a specified structure for your content, like the Problem Statement or Summary of the issue, Cause of the Issue & the solution to fix the issue.

For the interview with a technical writer, you can start below:
1. Create a Google form with some basic questions on the topic of your research or the topic on which you would like to write. If you would like a 1-on-1 interview, then you can share your email ID on the form asking folks to schedule a meeting with you.
2. Share the Google Form on some social media platform like LinkedIn or Reddit on forums related to Technical Writing.
3. Based on the response in Google Form, prepare your next set of interview queries and respond to any interests for 1 on 1 meeting with the responders.
