What was the hardest thing academically and financially in the path of becoming a nurse, how did you overcome the hardship?

I am sure i want to be a nurse, but i have heard so many comments on it being a hard path, however I haven't heard how they made it easier for themselves or overcame it.

Danielle’s Answer

Financially, I think the hardships were just bills and life in general. I was a young single mom when I started nursing school, but I took a little bit of extra time to explore scholarships and grants. Those really helped. I worked PRN as a PCA at the hospital, so I made a bit more than minimum wage and had control over my schedule.
Academically, I struggled to study in helpful ways. It seemed like I was studying everything we learned in class, but that’s not how it applied to the exams. The reality of nursing exams is applying what you learned to situations. Basically, you have knowledge but what are you going to do with that in this scenario? That is also where being a PCA helped. I learned by watching nurses handle real life patient scenarios and being part of the team.

Martin’s Answer

Realizing that there are two ways of being a nurse. There is the school way and then there is the real world. They are very different. You will have to play by the rules of the school and the faculty, many times these do not make sense. It can be a highly demanding program, but a very rewarding one. I think the time in school was harder to deal with, then after I completed the program and began to actually do nursing. It is challenging, but in a very different way and the rules you learn in school are not necessarily the ones you will use after becoming a nurse. You just need to accept these concepts and then be you after graduation.
