Hi Genevieve,
First of all, awesome news that you are thinking about your future while you are studying at college. A couple of general advice tips:

1. Get a job while studying. As long as it does not distract you from your studies, working at a job enables you to start saving, add experience to your resume, and practice working with different types of people-- from managers, coworkers, and customers. This job does not have to be immediately relevant to your degree, although that could certainly help! The most important part is getting the experience.

2. Start saving. Whenever you can, start adding small amounts to a tax- advantaged retirement account- whether it is a company sponsored 401k or a personal IRA, this will be super important for your future. Even if it is small amounts at first, time is the most important factor here. While you are young, that money will compound and build a foundation for your future. Then, if you have some extra money, transfer some money in investment account. There are plenty of options out there that are backed by the federal government and offer options to buy ETFs and other diversified stocks and bonds. SoFi is one of those options that has a automated account you can set up that helps you invest your money in a diversified portfolio that is totally robotic!

3. Do your own taxes. Learn this early on-- how much you are paying in taxes and how to go about the process (plenty of free ways to do this online).

4. Take a business or a communications course. No matter what degree you decide to pursue, it is important to know how to market yourself and prepare for a changing job market.

5. Connect personally with your professors and other professionals in your field of interest. It is important to have a network of people who are cheering you on!

6. Start building credit. Use a credit card, but always pay the balance off every month. It is important to start building good credit for any future loans you may need to take out (academic, auto, home). Do NOT use credit cards as a way to finance something you can't afford. The high cost of debt for credit cards is not worth it. If you do need to borrow money, look for lower interest options.

Hi Genevieve! It's great to connect with someone who shares my grandma's name. Here are some steps to consider as you plan your future:

1. Identify Priorities and Challenges: Decide what matters most to you, like financial security or personal peace. Think about what struggles you want to avoid.

2. Know Your Work Preferences: Consider if you enjoy working with others or prefer independent tasks. This will guide you in choosing a career path.

3. Learn from My Experience: I grew up on a farm where income was uncertain. I chose business and law for stability. Hard work and planning are essential in any field.

4. Take Actionable Steps:
- Join campus groups related to your career interests to gain experience and professionalism.
- Explore various career options that align with your interests.
- Build relationships with inspiring peers and mentors.
- Apply your learning through internships, volunteering, or projects to boost your confidence.

5. Stay Open-Minded: While it's good to have a focus, don't miss out on exploring new ideas and classes outside your main path. You might discover unexpected interests.

By considering these steps, you're setting yourself up for success. Keep exploring and be open to new opportunities!

Internships are great but a lot can be gained by job shadowing, too! Reach out to professionals in the field you want to work in and ask if you can shadow their job for a day or even a week. Prepare questions and make sure they know you want the experience of an average day for them and not a specially planned day for you.

I would prioritize discipline. Get correct habits to ensure you get things done. It is also important to ensure you finish the things you start. If you engaged with something, stick into to it until the end, if possible.

Also, start to build financial habits. Sometimes we don't get this though in high school, but it is very important to start to organize your money very early in your career. The sooner you start to safe and invest, the better you will manager your personal finance in the future.

Lastly, make sure you enjoy what you do for life, so it will be easier to get your life organized when you like what you do.

Hope this advice work for you!

Great question! I'd say to try to be clear on your priorities, values, and goals. If you know what's most important to you (faith, family, friends, giving back, etc), you can prioritize your actions each day. That doesn't mean there won't be struggles, because that is part of life. Know that you are focused on the important things in life and you will be successful!

With every good wish and many blessings!
