What schooling did you have to go through, and what certifications/degrees do you need to be a travel nurse?

I'm in 10th grade in a nursing program, and I'm interested in being a travel nurse. I would like to know more information and see if it is a good option for me!

Thank you comment icon I have been an RN & a Travel nurse. The most important thing to do is get your BSN first & 1 yr of Med Surg experience. Most of the best travel jobs with the highest rates will be at academic medical centers where they require BSN degrees & experience. It is easy to look at the high hourly pay rates for travel nursing & think that is an easy think to obtain as a HS student. But most hospitals are now discontinuing the use of travel nurses due to budget cuts. I have been a Hosp Admin for many yrs. Travel Nursing is one of the 1st line items we cut in our budgets. If you're still in high school and interested in becoming a travel nurse, the first step is to earn a nursing degree, either an Associate's or Bachelor's. If you're considering becoming an LPN, check if there are opportunities for traveling LPNs. Most travel RNs start after gaining at least 1-2 years of experience in their specialty.

For instance, I worked as a hemodialysis RN for five years before exploring travel contracts, and I started when the rates were relatively high. Typically, travel contracts last 13 weeks, but some can be longer, like 6 months or even 50 weeks. Choose a contract length that suits you.

Before contacting travel companies, decide where you want to go and check the rates in that area. Don't limit yourself to one company, and ensure you have enough savings for your initial travel expenses. Travel nursing offers great opportunities, but not every place will be ideal. Know your rights, protect your license, and take care of your mental health.

Hi!!

That's a great question. Most of the time you just need a couple of years in the field you want to travel under. For example working 2 years as a bedside nurse in Med/Surg - then connecting with a great Travel Company to get you set up on your 1st travel assignment!!!

They help you with licensure for the state you are traveling to, with housing, contracts and all of that :)
