According to the official websites of these colleges, DigiPen Institute of Technology in Redmond, Washington offers a rigorous BS in Computer Science and Game Design. Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) emphasizes co-ops and practical experience, and Rochester experiences warm but rarely extreme summers. NYU’s Game Center, located in Manhattan, provides excellent industry networking and full access to city life. SCAD combines artistic and technical skills, though some campuses may get quite warm during the summer. USC’s Interactive Media & Games Division is nationally ranked, but Los Angeles summers can occasionally surpass 85 °F.

Overall, DigiPen, RIT, and NYU best align with your preferences for game development programs in urban areas with comfortable summer temperatures, while SCAD and USC may require tolerance for hotter weather. Attending schools in temperate urban settings with strong portfolios, hands-on projects, and internship opportunities offers a solid foundation in game development while keeping your environment comfortable.

Hi Mabel,

If you’re interested in game development / game design, here are some colleges known for strong programs:

College / University Strengths
University of Southern California (USC) Top-ranked for interactive media & games; strong industry connections.
Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Great for programming-heavy game design and co-op opportunities.
DigiPen Institute of Technology Very game-focused; hands-on programming and design experience.
University of Utah (Entertainment Arts & Engineering) Balanced program in art, design, and engineering.
Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Excellent for game art and interactive design.

Tips when choosing a school:

Decide which part of game development you love (coding vs art/design).

Look for hands-on experience and portfolio-building opportunities.

Consider internships and industry connections for job placement.

Choose between specialized vs broader programs depending on your goals.

Good luck, Mabel — you’re on your way to creating amazing games!
