What skills and experiences should I start developing now to succeed in a career thats economics related?

Any types of internships, extracurriculars, volunteer work? Especially in the Bay Area

Thank you comment icon Hello Roger! Your inquiries have gone through my weekly mail. You are an ideal mentor for me, but from my international perspective because I do not live near your home country, I would suggest Networking matters: "Don’t be afraid to reach out to people in the field you’re interested in. A simple message or conversation can open doors you never imagined. Relationships often matter as much as skills. Blessing. Isida Mici

Beyond finance and economics, like internships and clubs, it's crucial to build strong analytical and problem-solving skills. These skills are versatile and can help you in many situations. Your courses will give you a solid foundation in economics, and your chosen career will provide the specific training you need.

What truly sets you apart is your ability to use this knowledge in any situation your employer presents. Many people struggle with new challenges if they haven't encountered them before, but with the right guidance, they can still have fulfilling careers. However, those who excel are the ones who can adapt their skills to tackle new problems. This adaptability is more important than ever as we navigate an economy that is rapidly changing due to technological advancements.

That's an excellent question, Roger! To set yourself up for success, you can start by exploring several things such as:

- Internships: These provide invaluable experience, help build your personal brand, and create a professional network. Internships are a fantastic way to gain on-the-job learning, receive performance feedback, and identify areas of responsibility you enjoy the most. They also help you build on your strengths and focus on areas needing development. Numerous companies offer internship programs and actively seek candidates through college outreach.

- AI Tools: As the business world continues to evolve, AI is at the forefront of these changes. Begin familiarizing yourself with AI tools such as Copilot and Chat GPT, which are becoming essential in various industries.

- Community Service: Engaging in community service is a wonderful way to give back while meeting new people and expanding your network.

In our ever-changing world, being agile, flexible, and capable of working in team settings can set you apart and take you far. Also seek opportunities to get involved, participate and read in regards to forums related to your area of preparation. For example: World Economic Forum Open Forum, Annual IMF Research Conferences and World Economics Association (online conferences) amongst others.

Hope this helps!

Hi Roger,

Since you will be working with a lot of data as an economist, it would be a good idea to start learning to code. Python is a great language to learn and widely used in data science.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!
