Hello, Praise !

You have definitely made the right decision by reaching out for advice. Everyone takes a different amount of time to decide on a career, so do not feel alone. It's great that you have interests. Despite that your interests are very general and not specific, you can start by focusing in on exactly which topic(s) in Science you like. As for "Commercials", focus in as to if you mean marketing, acting or modeling or advertising. Thinking in terms of specifics will help ground a first step to explore careers further.

So your first step in alleviating the worry is to choose one career, the one you love best. It's not "classes" to think about, it's the actual career to choose and making a commitment to yourself to take the path that will prepare yourself for your chosen career. You will have to take classes for a Major that will prepare you for a career. If you are worried about regretting not going with your dream career now, you have keen insight because people do sometimes regret not following their dream.

Something else you can do is not think about it but put yourself in an active mode with the skill set you'll need for the chosen career. You didn't say the exact work you need to choose so it's kind of difficult to really give you person-centered and detailed advice for this and I don't want to assume too many things like if it's that you're choosing between Acting or a medical career.

If you start entering the environment doing volunteer work or an extracurricular at school, keeping busy can possibly alleviate some of the worry. It will start to seem real, that you can do it, if you surround yourself with a bit of training or education for your chosen career, you will have a good start and learn that it can be done. I think that your indecision, like many other students, comes from the career just being a thought, creating thought scenarios and not actually living the skills that are needed for the career. Worrying about the future can create great barriers and then a person gets nothing done. You can choose. You can do it and you can start learning now.

My biggest advice is to return here to Career Village and express precisely what two careers you are trying to decide between. Like I mentioned, "science" and "commercials" contain a broad spectrum of possible careers and for accurate advice you need to be more descriptive in what you're asking about. Also, you can choose one career now and if you ever feel like transitioning into a different career decades later, you can. No one knows how their life is going to be, much less their career, in the future so it's not worth stressing over. Enjoy life, live in the moment and prepare yourself for your chosen career starting now. Ask more questions and use your time being active because worrying is a sure road block.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !

Hello Praise. The answer to what you want to do with the rest of your life doesn't have to be so black and white. There is a lot of gray area when it comes to education and career. It is a hard ask of any teenager to decide what education path to take. Life changes, visions change, likes and dislikes change. When I was in high school, I thought that I wanted to be a physical therapist; I went to college with that major in mind but after a short period of time, I learned that wasn't what I wanted to do. So, I followed my heart and went back home and went to a trade school to get my Licensed Practical Nurse. 20 years later, I have been back to school now 3 different times. I got my associates RN, got my bachelor's in nursing, and now I am in school for my Masters. It might have taken me a little longer but in the end, I am getting to where I want to be and that is Ok. It is ok to change your mind, to be unsure, and to want to follow your heart. Your life will not be ruined if you change your major or your job. Don't let others influence you and don't allow others to tell you what YOU should do with the rest of your life. Follow your vision and heart and you will be just fine!

Thank you for your question. Firstly, you can find out what careers you have interest first and then decide what subjects to choose.
Below are my suggestions:
1. There are many careers related to business or science, eg accountant, finance manager, marketing, human resources, doctor, pharmacist, zoologist, park ranger, engineer, etc. You can find out more related careers online.
2. Find out more on these and determine what you have interest
3. Speak to someone who are working in these careers. Seek guidance from your mentor, school career, counselor, your parents, etc
4. Shortlist 1-2 careers you would like to e
5. Choose the subjects relevant to these careers
Hope this helps! Good luck!
May Almighty God bless you!

A degree will ever hurt you.. I’m 42 and I have learned quickly I am most successful learning to make a living with my hands and another with my brain. College degree I got but I’m a plumber and an arborist .. so always have a back up plan if your degree doesnt pay for your life style and a family if that’s something you desire.

It's good that you are asking these questions, looking to the future and possible ramifications is always a good thing to do.

That being said, in my opinion and experience it is great to plan but you also must understand that plans are guides not road maps. Choices you make can have ramifications and affects on different aspects of your future but they do not dictate it nor are the outcomes guaranteed one way or the other. With young people I have worked with and my own children I watched them stress about every aspect of the future because many are convinced that they have to figure out the rest of their life and how to get there at 16 and I am here to tall you I haven't figured out mine at 58. So here is my advice to you:

1. Take a step back and breathe - Understand you have many years ahead of you and while you can map out a general course you cannot be expected to know everything that is going to happen over the next 50 years to change the work, social, political, economic....world that we live in. If you look around there are many people that made it out of college and into the professional world and I assure none have gone exactly as they had planned when they were your age and at one point or another they had to adjust. Many will tell you they regret this or that decision but it is one of many decisions that mapped out their life.

2. Don't be afraid to make mistakes and adjust - My first degree is in Accounting and Specialized management and I was pretty good at accounting but quickly understood when in the work world I hated accounting. I pivoted to IT and never looked back. There was some delay as I was taking a step back but later in my career I progressed quicker because I had understandings of business, accounting, auditing, etc. that my counterparts didn't. I could say I lost a couple years with the mis-step but in retrospect I learned a lot about the work world, how to be a professional and who I was in that mis-step (I'd gladly take that step again!)

3. Embrace the unknown - No matter how TV, Books, other people make you think that some people have the path all figured out and they have been cruising through life and you too can have the secret for 3 low payments of 34.95 know its not true, you see what they want you to see because we all struggle with the future. Life is hard and unpredictable. That sounds scary but it is also exciting and makes it worth getting up every morning to see what is next. You can talk to people in fields your interested and see what the potential is, how they got to the point they did and why. When you set your goals and you plans make them specific only in the very short-term and make the longer term ones that are much more flexible and don't be so married to them that you cannot pivot when the opportunity arises.

I wish you all the luck and success in the future and I am excited for your journey.

Rita’s Answer

Try to think of life as a learning experience. We are all learning and there are no mistakes…just learning experiences. No mater what you do, even if it’s a “mistake,” you learn from it and grow. You can always learn some lesson.

There is no wrong answer. Make the best choice with the data you have available. If you get to the other side and it wasn’t the right choice, you’ll have still learned something and can always go a take the other path.

Taking a step back doesn’t equal failure, you only fail when/if you give up.
