Are scholarships worth applying to or is it better to work instead?

Scholarships are very helpful and could cover several different needs. I was not able to get a scholarship before entering college but once I entered college I received several for academics. The scholarships paid part of my tuition which helped my mom a lot with two girls in their first and last year of college. With the cost of college today that is a value add. Even though we are in the digital world some course still requires a physical book, shocking I know, but scholarships can cover the cost of all the wonderful books you'll need. Some even cover your leaving accommodations.

I also worked in college. I managed one of the schools computer labs as part of my student work study. I was also selected by peers who had learning disabilities who needed note takers for classes that we may have taken together. The two opportunities provided me extra funds to buy supplies I needed for classes, personal needs and extra activities. This could help your parents and make you financially independent. Both jobs also allowed me the opportunity to focus on my school work and not have to be restricted to working the hours of a restaurant, clothing store, etc. Having a job many not be idea if your area of studies requires your full attention but you can only determine that yourself.

I understand the feeling that the work on scholarships won't turn up any opportunities. I'd agree that it's safest to assume that you'll be working to cover part of your expenses. Also, even if you do get the scholarships, if it's close financially, you'll want to work anyway to thicken the financial margin you're working with so you have a bit more security against unforeseen risk. That being said, keep applying for scholarships and seeing how things go. Try to give yourself a quota of applications filled out per day and work towards that instead of until you've gotten tired of it. Having specific goals helps make them more achievable.

Jeffery’s Answer

If you qualify for a scholarship go for it. They are there to help you and you do not have to pay them back. If you find that they were good for you make a scholarship fund yourself or donate to one later.
