Judith’s Answer

1. Duties of a dental hygienist: you will have a daily schedule of patients to work on. You will greet each patient, go over their medical history which they have filled out on the day you are servicing them. Take patient’s blood pressure and record. Take x-rays as needed, perform an oral prophylaxis ( scaling and polishing), apply fluoride, provide dental health education as needed for patient. Ask patient if they have any questions about their dental health. Finally, call in the dentist to perform an exam on the patient
2. I enjoy working with people and helping them better their dental health and over all health.
3. Most challenging in my career is having patients follow up on the advice given, staying on tight time schedule ( most dentists give dental hygienists 45 to 60 minutes to provide these services.
4. Manual dexterity is highly important. Your hands are your career. Working in a small area and working in close proximity to your patient. Working as a team member is also important. You and your dentist employer need to be on the same page as far as quality of work is concerned.
5. The education is 2-3 years of college with a concentration in the sciences. The coursework is very difficult, but the career is very rewarding. You are helping people better their health and lives
7. The education is not as long as a dentists ( DMD or DDS) or MD
8. Most hygienists work 4 days/ week, 9 hour days with an hour off for lunch. Now a days, your schedule could vary depending on the schedule of the dentist who you work for.. You will also have to take a licensing exam to practice Dental Hygiene . Each state has different requirements, but a National Board and a clinical board need to be passed before you can apply for licensure in a USA state
10. When I first started my career, the hardest part was keeping in schedule. When you are training in school, you have 3 hours to work on a patient. When you get out in practice, you have 45 to 60 minutes per patient. You need to hone in on your skills and speed up your work!! It takes about 5 years to really feel comfortable with your skills and your work.
