What was the biggest hurdle you had to overcome to become a surgeon?

Hi, my name is Anyelina and I am a middle school student. I am interested in becoming a cardiologist surgeon because I am inspired by the doctors in my family.
I want to follow in their footsteps, but I know the journey to this career is very long and challenging. I am writing to ask for some tips on what I should expect to face during my education and training. In your professional experience, what is the hardest part of the journey to becoming a cardiologist? Also, what are the most important basics or habits I should focus on learning now while I am still in middle school?

Thank you comment icon Becoming a cardiac surgeon is a marathon of discipline, with the longevity of training being the steepest hurdle. After medical school, you face nearly a decade of residency and fellowship, often working 80-hour weeks. The hardest part is the emotional weight; you are literally holding a life in your hands, which requires immense mental resilience. In middle school, the most important habit to build is curiosity combined with grit. Focus on excelling in life sciences and math, but also practice fine motor skills—hobbies like drawing or playing an instrument help develop the "surgical touch." Most importantly, learn to manage your time now. Being a surgeon isn't just about being smart; it’s about staying calm and focused when you are tired. Clarence

James’s Answer

The good news is that even though the journey to becoming a heart surgeon - or any other type of physician - is arduous, if you develop the right attitude and behaviors, you can achieve any career. Remember that it is fun and rewarding to learn. It gives one pride to accomplish things. It gives one joy to help others.
Focus on being a happy person who is pleased to learn more. Do not neglect your own wellness - get the sleep, good nutrition, exercise, and time with loved ones you need. Know that even when it seems difficult to connect your hard work with your goals, a successful physician uses all that knowledge each day. Math, physics, chemistry, biology, English (and other languages), engineering, statistics, and even philosophy, art, and social studies help one connect with both the science of medicine and the art of medicine.
Find opportunities to explore lots of areas of study and careers. See what resonates with you and that which makes you happy.

Morgan’s Answer

The biggest hurdle in becoming a cardiologist surgeon is usually the long and intense education and training, which includes college, medical school, residency, and often a fellowship. It requires years of hard work, focus, and dedication, as well as the ability to handle stress and long hours. While you’re in middle school, the most important habits to focus on are strong study skills, time management, curiosity in science and math, and developing patience and perseverance. Volunteering in healthcare settings or exploring science projects can also give you early experience and help confirm your interest in the field. Building these habits now will make the challenging journey much more manageable later.
