Hey Ethan, you're in a great spot being in 10th grade because you've got the perfect amount of time to prepare without rushing! Most college applications open in the summer before your senior year and are due between November (early decision/action) and January (regular decision), so you'll actually start submitting during 12th grade, but the real prep work should begin now. Use 10th and 11th grade to build your GPA, take challenging courses, study for standardized tests, get involved in extracurriculars, and start researching schools you're interested in. By the summer before senior year, you'll want your school list, essay drafts, and scholarship research mostly done so you're not scrambling. From my own experience, the times I planned ahead and prepared early for big academic milestones are what helped me earn merit scholarships and fellowship awards that covered a big chunk of tuition across multiple degrees, and that kind of preparation started well before the actual deadlines hit. So right now, focus on being the strongest student and most well-rounded person you can be, start visiting campuses or doing virtual tours during junior year, and you'll be ready to hit the ground running when applications open. You've got time!

There's no need to rush into applying for colleges yet, but planning ahead can make things easier later. Most students start looking at colleges in 11th grade and begin applying in the fall of 12th grade. Now is a good time to explore your options, learn about different schools, and visit campuses if possible. You can also focus on your interests, classes, and activities so that when it's time to apply, you'll know what you want.

You're not behind at all. Right now, just exploring, asking questions, and noticing what you like is the best way to get ready. By the time senior year comes, you'll feel more confident about where and how to apply.

Hi Ethan,

You are at a good place to start thinking about it, but you do not need to apply yet. Your time spent in 10th grade is more about getting familiar with your options and what different schools offer. You can start by casually looking at colleges, thinking about what you might want to study, and paying attention to what matters to you, like location, size, or programs. The actual application process usually comes later, but what you do now helps make that process easier and less stressful.
