What is the process like to become an elementary school teacher?
Hello! I am in school as an elementary education major & I was wondering what the process is like after graduating college to become a teacher? Do I have to student teach before becoming an actual teacher?

First: In most university/college education majors will do some student teaching in their senior year. Not to worry as they will take you through all the steps. At least at most places.
And now a bit of advice if you want to really get to know the inside of elementary teaching.
I would visit the elementary schools in your area, both public and private. Contact them and ask if you can talk to some of the teachers. With some luck it will work out. have some pertinent questions ready, about their education, what classes are like in general, problems, the "joys", and so forth. With some luck you may be able to talk to just more than one or two. With more luck you could be invited into a class as an observer, or even take part in some classroom activities.
I would recommend visiting such schools where your home is and where your institution of higher learning is located, if it is located "out of town".
the more you do this sort of thing, the more you will come to understand elementary education, its challenges and rewards, and the more comfortable you will become with your future, in my opinion.
And perhaps your own classes will also become more meaningful.

Hi Ivana :) I think Jerry gave a lot of insight. Here is how I can answer your question in basic steps: Earn your credential (through college or state credential program), find a school district that offers the support you need/demographic you'd love to work with, and then teach! Rules differ by state, but as you go through any teaching program, they will walk you through the steps. Best of luck on your teaching journey!
