When I start looking for jobs next year how do I decide where I should look, I am a nursing major, so I need sign up for that states licensure before I take the NCLEX. And when I know where I want to look how do I make sure I get the job that I want there?

I plan on going into the Oncology field specifically infusion. I am from Illinois, going to college in Colorado, but would like to move somewhere closer to home.

Starting your nursing career in a hospital is a great idea. It will give you a chance to learn a lot and build on what you studied in school. You'll get to see different situations and grow your skills. In smaller practices, you might not get as much variety, so a hospital setting can be really beneficial.

Hi Ally. Colorado is a Compact Licensure state, so passing the NCLEX there will allow you to practice in some other compact states without retaking the exam. However, I don't believe Illinois is a compact state, so check the State's website to see what their criteria is for you to practice. (In fact, I would recommend doing that for any State in which you wish to practice - it should have all the information / requirement you need to meet in order to practice in their state)

As far as looking for jobs, I always highly recommend contacting the company's HR dept directly. Also, attend hiring events They are great ways of connecting directly with the company's hiring folks. (of course, always dress professionally, and bring plenty of resumes) You can also sign up on professional websites, such as Linkedin, which is a great way to connect with companies, and their hiring professionals. Also, sign up on job board sites, (i.e. Indeed, Glassdoor, ZipRecruiter) for leads.

Finally, I strongly recommend working in a hospital first. The experience you gain will be invaluable, and make you a far more attractive hire to any other company you may wish to go. (and you may end up liking it, and wanting to stay.... I did)

Best of luck!

You will sign up to take the Nclex and you pay a fee for your licensure. Colorado is a compact state , so most states will let you work initially with a compact licensure. Before you graduate your instructors will probably guide you through all this.
