How do college students stand out when being chosen for internship programs, and what are ways they can discover more niche internships?

I am going into social work and want to work in nonprofits, and I was wondering how I'd be able to find internships for that since it's an uncommon field.

Many people share this interest, and doing your homework now will really pay off later. Try using LinkedIn or local social media to find companies you're interested in and reach out to someone who works there. You could invite them for coffee or ask if you can shadow them for a day. Nonprofits often need extra help, whether paid or unpaid. Also, talk to your school counselor, they might have useful contacts. Remember, your network can be your greatest support and help you land a role like this.

Hi Cecilia,

I used to be a campus recruiter and studied nonprofit/social work, so I know this field well!

For internships, the most important thing is to grow your network. If you know someone, that's great! If not, no worries—LinkedIn is a great tool to help. Check out the company page and try to connect with someone working in a nonprofit you're interested in. For example, when I was in college, I was excited about Make a Wish. I didn't know anyone there, so I reached out to someone at a local branch and eventually got an internship offer because of that connection.

When it comes to nonprofits, focus on the ones that interest you most. Try volunteering at these organizations locally. This will help you see if it's a place you'd like to work and allow you to build strong relationships with the staff. Plus, it can boost your resume when you're ready to apply.

Good luck!
