After, or during college, how should I go about getting internships with professional sports teams for marketing #Spring26?

I want to join a marketing team for, hopefully an MLB or NFl team.

Sports marketing internships are competitive, so start building proof that you understand both marketing and the team/fan experience. Create sample social posts, campaign ideas, email promotions, or event concepts for an MLB or NFL team you like. Then put those samples with your resume on a simple online page so recruiters can see your work quickly. Self is free and easy to use: https://self.cv/

I see that you are listed as being in Oregon. This is a FANTASTIC location for someone with an interest in the Sports industry.

I went to the University of Oregon for an MBA in Sports Marketing and can vouch for the fact that the network is incredibly strong and full of professionals who want to help aspiring students. I'd recommend tapping into the Warsaw Sports Business center network. Even if you are not a student at UO, you can use your interest in the field and a genuine curiosity to LEARN from the experiences of those who are likeminded to begin to build your network. See what opportunities for volunteer work pop up to begin to build your project list on your resume, and use the network you begin to create to make connections in the league/team space. This is a longer term play, but it is one that everyone I know in the industry has used to make meaningful connections.

My main advice is to ask questions and say yes to opportunities as you study sports business. You'll learn a lot and set yourself up for a rewarding career.

My son majored in Sports Management and worked at a SportsBook. He played varsity and league sports (football, baseball, and basketball) and had a 3.8 GPA. Following his experience, hopefully you will play sports. Having an internship is important, but applying to the top ones will be more competitive. Look into other areas within sports, such as a social media or community relations intern, a ticket sales role, a Game Day operations assistant, and a sports marketing intern.

Other examples based on your experience include: a Sports radio station intern, a podcast or content creator for a sports media company. If you're involved in sports or athletics at school, you can look for internships there, such as an athletic department intern, media relations assistant, office assistant, personal trainer, or coaching assistant.

For ESPN, the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NCAA, you'll need experience such as working at tournaments, managing social media for a team, or handling statistics to help you stand out. Or, try the WNBA.

You need a strong resume that includes a background in sports, a strong GPA, and volunteer experience that shows your interest in giving back to your community. Highlight these examples to stand out. SportsMarketing StudentAthlete SportsInternships FutureinSports
