Hi Kayleah!

It's fantastic that you're asking about this. I have a similar background, having studied Sociology, Liberal Arts, and Psychology in college. As you pursue your master's in social work, here are a couple of tips: First, try to ensure your bachelor's degree relates closely to your master's. This connection can make it easier to enter the field. Second, make sure social work is truly what you want to do. It involves handling many cases and working with people in tough situations, which can be challenging. But the reward is in making a positive impact on someone's life! I hope these tips are helpful.

Wishing you the best of luck!

1. Know What MSW Programs Value
Graduate social work programs look beyond just grades. They want:

A strong desire to help others
Experience with vulnerable groups
Good communication and empathy
Solid academic performance (GPA of 3.0 or higher)

Experience and purpose are as important as academics.

2. Gain Experience Early (Top Tip)
As a freshman, you have a head start. Focus on gaining experience by volunteering at:

Hospitals or clinics
Mental health centers
Shelters or food banks
Crisis hotlines (later on)

Or working/interning in:

Case management
Community outreach
Public health programs

Why it matters:
MSW programs want to see that you:

Understand real-world challenges
Know what social work involves
Are committed beyond academics

3. Use Your Major Wisely
Healthcare Services Administration can complement social work. Focus on:

Health disparities
Access to care
Insurance barriers
Case coordination
Public health systems

This prepares you for roles like:

Medical social worker
Hospital case manager
Policy or program developer

4. Pick Relevant Courses
If possible, take classes in:

Psychology
Sociology
Human development
Public health
Ethics

These courses strengthen your MSW application and prepare you for graduate studies.

5. Connect with Professors Early
This is important for:

Recommendation letters
Research opportunities
Mentorship

Simple steps:

Visit office hours once or twice a semester
Ask about their work or seek advice
Be consistent, not just when you need something
