How do you navigate finding your first job after college without having a massive professional network?

I'm worried about getting a job when I finish college. I don't want to rely on my parents for too long. I do mostly digital art and traditional art.

Finding your first job after college without a large professional network can feel intimidating, but many people start exactly that way — including me. Not everyone has access to internships, volunteer programs, or family connections, and that’s okay. What matters most is being proactive, consistent, and willing to learn.

At the beginning of your career, focus on building relationships little by little. Every classmate, professor, manager, customer, or coworker can become part of your future network. Networking does not have to feel fake or forced — it often grows naturally through work ethic, kindness, and reliability.

Some things that can really help are:
• Creating a strong LinkedIn profile
• Reaching out politely to professionals in your field
• Attending local industry events or conferences
• Applying for entry-level positions even if they are not your “dream job” yet
• Taking certifications or online courses to strengthen your resume
• Building a portfolio of projects, photos, or experiences

One important thing I learned is that your attitude and professionalism can open as many doors as connections. Many employers value people who are hardworking, adaptable, organized, and eager to grow.

Your first job is rarely your final destination. The goal is to get experience, continue learning, and slowly build your confidence and network over time.

I suggest getting a LinkedIn account to network. You can also submit your art there. Plus, you should pick a social media site like Instagram or Twitter to post your work and grow your audience.
