What was your most difficult challenge that you didn't expect to experience when becoming a surgeon, and how did you face it?#Spring26
As a prospective neonatal surgeon, I am looking to prepare for possible blocks in the long road of college, residency, and fellowships, that may drain my passion in the healthcare field. I'm interested in learning how professionals faced those challenges to sustain their passion in their field!

Thinking about your future in this way is really smart. Going through college, medical school, residency, and fellowship can be very rewarding, though it can also be tough. Remember, passion isn't always about being excited all the time. It's often about staying disciplined, being patient, and pushing through even when things get hard.
Many people find it helpful to stay connected to their "why"—the reason they chose healthcare. It’s also important to take it one step at a time, so you don’t feel overwhelmed by how long the journey seems. In my experience in healthcare, giving myself grace during tough times, asking for help when needed, and celebrating small wins have been key. Challenges don't mean you’re losing passion; they’re just part of growing into your future role. Preparing yourself mentally now and learning from others will help you keep that passion alive.
