Hi, Sky-

It's fantastic that you're planning for your future and looking into career options! Here are some tips to help you explore while you're in college:

1. Reach out to your professors and teaching assistants. They have a lot of knowledge and may know people in the industry or have access to helpful resources. If you show interest, they'll likely be happy to help you grow your network and offer advice.

2. Get in touch with alumni from your school. Many have successful careers in this field, and you can learn so much from their experiences. Consider setting up informational interviews or exploring internships to gain valuable experience.

Wishing you all the best on your journey!

Carolina’s Answer

Make the most of your school's career center as soon as you arrive on campus. Many students wait, but it's really helpful to start early. They can guide you on when different industries hire, assist with your resume, and connect you to career fairs, networking events, and panels.

It's also a good idea to create a LinkedIn profile if you haven't already. Start browsing internships to see what's available and what companies are looking for. This will help you get familiar with the job market early on.

Freshman internships often open in the spring, from January to April, but some programs start in the fall. For fields like consulting, recruiting can begin really early, sometimes as soon as the summer before your junior year.

During your freshman year, focus on gaining exposure and experience. Join clubs, attend events, and continue your jewelry business, which is already a great conversation starter. These activities will be valuable when you start applying for internships.
Thank you comment icon Thank you so much, this is very helpful! I will make sure to visit the career center as soon as I get to campus. Sky

Hi Sky! Check out internship opportunities on LinkedIn and Handshake. I used both when searching for internships and full-time jobs, and they really helped. Try to grow your network by talking to people and learning about their work. Stay open-minded and curious, and explore different marketing internships to find the best fit for you.

Casey’s Answer

Internships are very exciting! I'd recommend LinkedIn and Indeed to start. If your local area has a job board that you can get email updates on, I'd highly recommend that. Many larger schools utilize Handshake as well. Handshake can connect you with alumni that are very open to working with current students. Your school may also host career fairs, and I'd highly recommend checking those out! It's one of the best ways to get more comfortable giving an elevator pitch on yourself and its very low stakes.

Casey recommends the following next steps:

Create profiles online (LinkedIn, etc.)
Connect with your school (career management offices and career fairs)
Talk to anyone and everyone to get your name out there!

If you are looking for an internship for the fall i would recommending as soon as you can. If you are looking for an internship for summer 2027 I would recommend starting looking in January.

Check if your school has a career development center. They tend to be good a resource and if not other options are your network and online options like: LinkedIn, Indeed and so on.

Chris’s Answer

See if your school has resources/alumni network/job board - often times there is a network of former students that could have internship opportunities.

Create a LinkedIn and start connecting with people in your field and/or alumni from your school as well. If you search on LinkedIn Jobs for internships, there are usually quite a few posted as well.

Lastly, depending on the specific area of business you are interested in, try cold calling various businesses in the area (or even look online at their job boards). Many larger organizations have entry level internship programs that run annually.

All this being said, entering freshman year and it already being summer might be a bit late for this year, but start looking in the winter of 2026 -spring 2027 for summer 2027 opportunities

Dawn’s Answer

Great resources to explore include talking to your counselor or teachers, reaching out to family friends, and connecting with local small businesses, as many don't advertise internships. Also, check out your future college's career center or Handshake once you have access, along with LinkedIn, Indeed, and company career pages. For business and marketing roles, search for terms like "marketing intern," "social media intern," "e-commerce intern," "sales/business development intern," and "nonprofit marketing intern."

When to start: Begin preparing now by using your jewelry business as experience. Track your followers, views, and sales, create content, and save examples of your work. Apply seriously between January and April 2026 for summer positions, as local and nonprofit opportunities are often more welcoming to freshmen. Then, start early again between August and October 2026 for Summer 2027 internships, as larger companies tend to recruit early.

Nic’s Answer

Hi Sky, that is a great question! First I would start with your resume. I would highlight the skills that you have learned with your jewellery business and how they directly apply to the job you are applying for. For example if you are applying to a marketing internship I would share numbers on how you have used social media at your business to drive x number of clients. Lots of companies especially startups will appreciate this experience.

I would also network as much as you can as others have mentioned. Whether that is through networking events, clubs or other students. Having an introduction at a company will make a big difference towards securing an internship. You can connect with people who work at companies you are applying to and ask for an intro many will be happy to do this.
