What steps should I take to become a pharmacist and to gain hands-on experience ?

I am currently a high school senior preparing to graduate and continue my education in college. I want to become a pharmacist but I'm a little lost on what classes I should take, what majors I should consider, and how to gain experience while still in school. All advice is appreciated! #Spring26

The field of pharmacy has changed dramatically over the years. I have been a pharmacist for over 20 years, and even though I love what I do, I would not advise the future generation to go into pharmacy. I say that because now you have to do at least 2 residencies to be competitive. Plus there are so many pharmacy schools now, that the market is overly saturated. To get a job you may have to move to the out skirts where no one wants to be. I would seriously reconsider your path. But don't take my word for it. Research the profession. Speak to other pharmacists. I would look into becoming a PA or nurse practitioner. Less time in school, better pay, and they are in demand. If you really want job security, look into the mental health profession. Hope this helps. Wish you the best.

Find out what prerequisites are needed for pharmacy school so you don’t waste time in undergrad, get with a good counselor at school, and get a job at a local pharmacy to make sure you like it.

While you are still in school, you can check if there are volunteering opportunities or even part time internship in local pharmacy where you can shadow the professionals and get closer to the profession and the required knowledge. Additionally, you can check for podcast from pharmacy professional where they can touchbase themes about their preparation and education and to hear what's been important to them to become successful.

Pre pharmacy curriculum, take as many biology and chemistry classes as possible. Volunteer @ local hospitals in pharmacy department and work in retail pharmacy to learn as much as you can about the profession… best of luck!
