I am interested in computer science, and the best computer science programs are at large research institutions; YET the most appealing campuses for me have had smaller student bodies. Where can I find a combination of these attributes, giving me the best of both worlds? #Spring26

For example, I love Davidson College, but Virginia Tech or Georgia Tech have much better computer majors and opportunities. Is there a small school out there that has great computer science??

Choosing the right school isn't just about its reputation. It's also about how easily you can find research opportunities, internships, and connect with talented classmates in computer science. No small college fully matches the scale, course variety, or recruiting reach of large research universities like Georgia Tech or Virginia Tech, but small schools such as Harvey Mudd College, Swarthmore College, and Pomona College achieve strong outcomes through intensity, selectivity, and strong student engagement.

If you like the feel of Davidson College, Swarthmore and Pomona are the closest upgrades, keeping a small campus environment while significantly strengthening CS opportunities. For a slightly larger but still personal experience with stronger engineering depth, Rice University and Tufts University are strong options, offering better recruiting, research infrastructure, and industry access than most liberal arts colleges.
